By September 1976, Nick Bockwinkel had already rewritten the American Wrestling Association’s hierarchy. Ten months earlier, on November 8, 1975, at the St. Paul Civic Center, the 40-year-old technician had ended Verne Gagne’s seven-year AWA World Heavyweight Championship reign. The finish involved Bobby Duncum’s interference while special referee Paul Perschmann was distracted, a classic heel championship change that immediately established Bockwinkel as the promotion’s most hated man. Managed by Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and billing himself as “the smartest wrestler alive,” Bockwinkel combined polished amateur-style wrestling, verbal arrogance, and calculated rule-breaking.
