The month showcased the classic traveling champion model at work, as Funk faced established regional stars and emerging threats in packed venues from California and the Carolinas to Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and back through West Texas, all while the broader territorial landscape navigated fragmentation and shifting power dynamics.
The opening week of July found Funk active across Texas, California, and the Mid-Atlantic. On July 1 in Amarillo he captured the local NWA International Heavyweight Championship by defeating the Super Destroyer, adding a regional title to his World Championship duties and reinforcing his status as the top draw in the Western States circuit. Shortly afterward he traveled east for a string of defenses in the Carolinas. On July 4 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Funk retained against Chief Wahoo McDaniel in a hard-fought encounter that highlighted the physical intensity of Mid-Atlantic wrestling. The following night, July 5, at Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina, he successfully defended against Paul Jones. On July 6 in Columbia, South Carolina, Funk continued the Mid-Atlantic swing by retaining against Rufus R. Jones. He closed the week on July 7 back in Abilene, Texas, facing Fritz Von Erich in another significant territorial clash.
