1955 is the first year in Stage Four, Investigation of The Territory Era of Professional Wrestling
Professional wrestling in 1955 stood at a pivotal juncture, embodying the post-World War II boom while grappling with emerging challenges that would shape its future. This was the height of the territory era in North America, where regional promotions under the umbrella of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) dominated the landscape, fostering a system of cooperative booking and shared championships. Globally, the sport was expanding, with significant developments in Mexico, the United Kingdom, and even the nascent women’s wrestling scene in Japan. However, 1955 also marked the beginning of legal scrutiny, television shifts, and internal disputes that hinted at the industry’s vulnerabilities. Attendance figures remained strong in major markets, drawing crowds of 10,000 or more to arenas like Madison Square Garden and the Montreal Forum, but the sudden cancellation of national TV broadcasts signaled a dip in mainstream visibility.
