The Death of Sam Bass and the Masked Dominoes: A Turning Point in the Tennessee Territory
In the humid Tennessee summer of 1976, the NWA Mid-America territory was a living, breathing organism of weekly cards, long drives, and carefully cultivated heat. Memphis, Nashville, and the surrounding towns still operated under the dual influence of Nick Gulas and the rising presence of Jerry Jarrett. Crowds packed the Mid-South Coliseum and smaller halls for a mix of established veterans, ambitious young talent, and the kind of intense personal rivalries that defined territorial wrestling. At the center of much of that heat stood Sam Bass—wrestler, manager, and one of the most effective heat-drawing figures in the territory’s recent history. On the night of July 26 and into the early hours of July 27, that figure, along with the masked tag team known as the Dominoes, was erased in a single fiery crash on Interstate 40.
