The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) World Heavyweight Championship stands as one of the most prestigious titles in professional wrestling history, symbolizing not just athletic prowess but also the intricate politics and business decisions of the territorial wrestling era. In the mid-1970s, the NWA operated as a coalition of regional promotions, with its board of directors—comprised primarily of territory owners—holding the ultimate authority over title changes. These decisions were often made through votes of the Championship Committee at annual organization conventions, balancing factors like drawing power, reliability, and the ability to elevate local talent across various regions. A pivotal moment in this system occurred at the NWA Convention in August 1975, when the NWA board convened to address the future of the championship held by Jack Brisco.

The situation was further complicated by the fact that Sam Muchnick was adamantly stepping down as President of the organization requiring the membership to select his replacement. Ultimately, Jack Adkisson, (Fritz Von Erich), the owner of the Big Time Wrestling office in Dallas was chosen to replace Muchnick. First problem solved. The second issue was that previously the membership, along with Muchnick’s influence had successfully talked Brisco into remaining the champion. Brisco had been a successful draw and his matches with Dory Funk, Jr continued to bring fans to arenas all over the world. This time was different, however, as Brisco refused to come to the convention, signaling to the membership he was stepping down and could not be swayed differently this time around. The Championship Committee, made up of Bob Geigel of Kansas City, Eddie Graham of Florida, Jim Crockett, Jr of the Carolinas, Dory Funk, Jr of Amarillo, Mike LeBell of Los Angeles, Frank Tunney of Toronto and the new President, Fritz Von Erich made the decision to hold a special session to discuss the championship title on November 1st in Von Erich’s town of Dallas, Texas.
