July 1976 continued Terry Funk’s demanding schedule as NWA World Heavyweight Champion, with the Amarillo native balancing high-profile defenses across multiple territories while maintaining a presence in his home Western States promotion. Tony’s Media Appearances This Past Week:
I am now the official historian of the Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw Show and in our latest project to document the history of professional wrestling, we are doing The History of Texas Wrestling.
In Episode 6, we cover Dallas wrestling with Burt Willoughby and EdMcLemore, the opening of the Sportatorium and the beginnings of the regular Tuesday night Dallas cards. We also continue the story of Morris Sigel in Houston with the amazing main event star, Leo “Daniel Boone” “Whiskers” Savage, the first tag team match in Texas. We also bring Karl “Doc” Sarpolis into the picture, the amazing booking innovator who created so many concepts in Texas wrestling including the Texas Heavyweight Championship. Plus the amazing relationship Sarpolis had with both Dallas and Houston as he is booking the talent for three-fourths of Texas and parts of other states with the creation of The Texas Wrestling Agency.
We break all of this down and much more in Episode 6 of the History of Texas Wrestling!
