This past week we had a pro wrestling universe podcast first! A podcast surprise party for the author of the Wrestling Observer Book of the Year for 2025, Brian R. Solomon. The distinction for Brian is that he is a two-time winner of the award and the only author to do so on a solo journalism project. His book “Irresistible Force: The Life and Times of Gorilla Monsoon” is the excellent biography on Gino Marella, otherwise known as Gorilla Monsoon.
As many of you know, I invited Brian on the show last year when the book came out, so he was a little mystified why I would ask him to come back when our first conversation was so thorough. What Brian didn’t know was I had invited three of his colleagues and friends to be in the Pro Wrestling Time Tunnel Green Room and once I had Brian comfortable, I opened the door for the three guys to come in and surprise Brian. Brian told me privately how much he appreciated this show and how much it meant to him.
We talk very little about the book actually. The conversation revolves around many wrestling topics. The history of books on pro wrestling, the books we may never have, the books we may still get and the influence of Artificial Intelligence on the information of wrestling history that is being proliferated and much, more. Totally unplanned, in turn, I appeared on Brian’s show “Shut Up and Wrestle” this past week. Brian is doing an NWA World Champions Series and he asked me to do the episode on Dory Funk, Jr., which I was thrilled to do. I think if you check out this episode, you will come away with a brand new perspective and appreciation of Dory Funk, Jr. and his almost four year run with the biggest prize in professional wrestling.
