Dear Pro Wrestling History Enthusiasts:
Tony here with a special alert!
I was just made aware this morning to a special public service announcement from my friend Charles at Wrestling Playlists, who is the foremost curator of video footage in pro wrestling history, and we like to support Charles and his initiative to let the WWE Vault know just how many classic pro wrestling fans out here support the channel and old pro wrestling footage.
I have permission from Charles, so I am just going to copy his message here for those of you who don’t yet subscribe to his newsletter and video vault:
WWE Vault just released a May 15, 1983, show at the Omni, presented by Georgia Championship Wrestling.
The card:
Brett Wayne vs Joe Lightfoot
Brian Blair vs Chic Donovan
Ron Garvin vs Bob Roop
Tommy Rich & Ray Candy vs Arn Anderson & Matt Borne
Stan Hansen & Dick Murdoch & Brian Blair vs Iron Sheik & Paul Ellering & Killer Brooks
Paul Orndorff vs Larry Zbyszko
Tony Atlas vs Killer Brooks
The Rich-Candy vs Arn-Borne match aired in part on the Sunday evening TBS show, but never in full. The rest of this card has never been released.
This is generally considered a down period for Georgia Championship Wrestling and as we see, many wrestlers are pulling double duty. Rent at the Omni was high and smaller shows held in the building sometimes lost money because the building lease was so expensive. Many, including Jim Barnett, credit the decline of Georgia Championship Wrestling to renting the Omni for every single show instead of continuing to run regular cards at the Municipal Auditorium and saving the Omni for bigger shows.
This particular show does not contain any title matches but does have some matches that look very interesting on paper and as we all know, wrestling ebbs and flows, so some shows are bigger or more spectacular than others. Still, this has immense value as a new piece of history, and at least three of the matches look highly appealing to me when I look at the lineup.
It’s important to get the numbers up to encourage them to release more shows, so make sure you watch so they do more of this type of thing!
