He was born Edgar Civil on the turn of the century year of 1900 in East Liverpool, Ohio and raised by his grandparents in Ashland, Kentucky on the far northeastern part of the state. He grew to a fairly good size, ultimately standing six foot three inches tall and weighing a hefty two hundred and fifty pounds. He snuck into the US Army when he was about sixteen; he got kick out and rejoined and served for some time in the United States Navy in Europe.
