August 1986

Stage 7, 1986: August in the Ring

August 1986 was not a quiet month between WrestleMania II and Starrcade. It was the month the World Wrestling Federation proved a single outdoor card in Canada could outdraw most territorial years; the month Jim Crockett Promotions finished a thirteen-city summer tour, flipped the NWA World Heavyweight Championship twice in two weeks, and crowned a new United States Champion in the seventh match of a blood feud; and the month the rest of the North American map kept running while the ground under it shifted. Hulkamania was no longer a New York phenomenon. It was a touring industrial system. Everything else was either adapting to that system or dying in its shadow.

What follows is a territory-by-territory and nation-by-nation account of the wrestlers, programs, and gates that defined those thirty-one days, closed by a business reading of the month as Stage 7 of 1986.

The WWF: Orndorff, Savage, and a Stadium in Toronto

Hulk Hogan entered August as undisputed WWF World Heavyweight Champion. The angle that sold the month was not a new challenger from outside the company. It was betrayal from inside it. Paul Orndorff, “Mr. Wonderful,” had spent the first half of the year as Hogan’s friend and tag partner. By late July he had turned, aligning with Bobby Heenan. House-show main events through August were built almost entirely on Hogan versus Orndorff, usually ending in disqualification so the title stayed put and the rematch stayed hot. They wrestled that way in Minneapolis, Landover, Cincinnati, Rosemont, St. Louis, and, most famously, Toronto.

Randy Savage was Intercontinental Champion, Miss Elizabeth at ringside, already the most complete midcard attraction the company had. Pedro Morales, Tito Santana, and Ricky Steamboat were the men asked to make him look like a problem Hogan would eventually have to solve. The British Bulldogs, Davey Boy Smith and the Dynamite Kid, held the tag titles they had won at WrestleMania 2 and were still defending them in cages against Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake. Harley Race, having won the King of the Ring tournament in July, was being crowned on television in August, a royal heel in Heenan’s court. Jake Roberts was moving from novelty (the snake) to featured worker. Roddy Piper, after the boxed circus of WrestleMania 2, was sliding toward the face side of the ledger even as the Saturday-morning cartoon still treated him as a villain.

Two other pieces of August television matter. Championship Wrestling taped its last episode on August 5 in Poughkeepsie. Superstars of Wrestling would replace the old syndicated format in September; the tapings for that changeover happened in Providence and Hartford at the end of the month. And the Machines angle was in full flower: André the Giant, hidden under a mask as Giant Machine, teaming with Super Machine and Big Machine while Heenan insisted everyone could see it was André. It was silly. It also kept André on the road without putting him in a conventional singles program before the company was ready.

The month’s monument was The Big Event on August 28 at Exhibition Stadium on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition. Paid attendance was 61,470. Total crowd estimates ran from the mid-sixties to the low seventies. The gate was reported around eight hundred thousand to a million Canadian dollars. Hogan beat Orndorff by disqualification in eleven minutes. The undercard was a touring WWF house show blown up to stadium scale: Killer Bees over the Funks, Muraco drawing with King Tonga, Junkyard Dog against Adrian Adonis, a Snake Pit match for Steamboat and Roberts, Hercules against Billy Jack Haynes, the Dream Team against the Bulldogs, King Kong Bundy against Big John Studd in a sideshow of giants, Harley Race against Pedro Morales. It was not booked like a modern premium live event. It was booked like proof that Hulkamania could fill a football stadium on a Thursday night in another country.

The next night, August 29, the company ran the Sam Muchnick Memorial Tournament at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis. Harley Race won the tournament over Ricky Steamboat in the final. Hogan and Orndorff went to another disqualification. Race, who always said he would never give in to the WWF machine, found himself working for them in the Summer of 1986 after admittedly losing over six figures trying to stay afloat with the Central States promotion in Kansas City. After taking suck a hit in his bank account, Race gave in and was rewarded by going over in the Muchnick tournament in the second well known market he was identified with, St. Louis.

Its also worth noting as well in New York City, Madison Square Garden on August 25 had drawn more than 22,000. The machine was not resting between television tapings.

It was printing money on the road.

Jim Crockett Promotions and the NWA: Two Title Changes and a Battle for St.Louis

If the WWF’s August was about scale, Crockett’s August was about density. The Great American Bash tour that had begun July 1 in Philadelphia ended August 2 at Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta in front of about 12,000. Ric Flair had defended the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against a murderers’ row of challengers across thirteen cities. Dusty Rhodes had taken the belt from him in a steel cage on July 26 in Greensboro. In Atlanta, Rhodes went over Flair again to close the tour. One week later, on August 9 in St. Louis, Flair got the title back.

In the finish to the match, Rhodes appeared to have the pin, the referee noticed Flair’s foot on the rope, the match continued, and the figure-four ended the reign after two weeks. Gene Ligon was the referee. The angle was done in conjunction with an angle in Kansas City on the same tour where Tully Blanchard injured Rhodes’ knee to re-ignite thier series as the World title series between Rhodes and Flair, that began back at Starrcade 1984 came to a close in August of 1986. The stage was set for the new chapter between Flair and Magnum TA to begin.

Jim Crockett Promotions had the first crack at the St. Louis market in August of 1986 and they fired a major bullet, an NWA World Title change that drew 6,300 fans. When the WWF came to The Gateway City for the Sam Muchnick Tournament later in the month on August 29th, they drew 10,612. The battle had been closer in 1985, but as the Summer of ‘86 rolled on, the gap became substantial especially with Harley Race in the WWF arsenal.

The Four Horsemen—Flair, Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson, Tully Blanchard, with J.J. Dillon—were the most coherent heel faction in American wrestling. They did not need a stadium. They needed television and a building that hated them.

The other championship program that defined the month was Magnum T.A. versus Nikita Koloff for the vacant United States Title. Magnum had been stripped earlier in the year. NWA president Bob Geigel ordered a best-of-seven. The series ran through the Bash and past it. By mid-August they were tied 3–3. On August 17 in Charlotte, Nikita won the seventh match and the title.

Magnum was still the company’s clearest homegrown future world champion. And that program was going to start along with a new series with Jimmy Garvin. The business with Nikita was finished for now. Six weeks later a car wreck would end that future. In August nobody in the territory was booking around absence. They were booking around a man who could main-event against Flair and against the Russians and against the Horsemen and still look like the one who should win.

Magnum TA was the heri apparent.

Tag team wrestling was not a midcard afterthought. On August 16 in Philadelphia, the Rock ’n’ Roll Express—Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson—beat the Midnight Express, Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey, two falls to one, and took the NWA World Tag Team Championship. Jim Cornette and Big Bubba Rogers were the heat. The Road Warriors were the wrecking crew that made six-man tags feel like riots. Baby Doll was still in Dusty’s corner, though the television in the second half of the month was already planting the idea that her loyalty was not permanent. World Championship Wrestling on TBS, with Tony Schiavone and David Crockett and Cornette as a guest host who could not stop talking about himself, was the national alternative to Vince McMahon’s product. It looked like a different sport: longer matches, more blood, more factions, less cartoon.

Crockett was also running Mid-Atlantic towns on a grind that would have looked familiar in 1978: Greensboro, Norfolk, Fayetteville, Asheville, Roanoke, Macon, Greenville. The difference was that the same wrestlers were now also the faces of a cable show seen far outside the Carolinas.

The Rest of the American Map

The American Wrestling Association was still a name. It was no longer a threat. Nick Bockwinkel held the AWA World Heavyweight Championship after Stan Hansen’s messy departure in June. Verne Gagne’s last match had been June 29. ESPN gave the company a national window it did not have the roster or the production to fill. The talent worth watching was young and already looking at the exits: Curt Hennig, Scott Hall, the Midnight Rockers—Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty—Sherri Martel as women’s champion. House shows in Green Bay and Las Vegas at the end of August were not events that moved the industry. They were a promotion spending its inheritance.

World Class in Dallas had left the NWA in February and restyled itself the World Class Wrestling Association. The Von Erich myth was still the product, but the family was broken. Kerry had wrecked a motorcycle on June 4. Mike, back from toxic shock syndrome, had returned July 4 and been plugged into the six-man titles with Kevin and Lance. Lance Von Erich was not a Von Erich. The crowd was asked to pretend. Chris Adams was WCWA World Heavyweight Champion, having beaten Rick Rude on July 4. Buzz Sawyer held the Texas title for part of the month. Bruiser Brody still meant something when he walked through the curtain. On the August 30 television taping, Ravishing Rick Rude worked the Dingo Warrior—Jim Hellwig, not yet the Ultimate Warrior, already moving like a problem. Ken Mantell had already left for Bill Watts and taken bodies with him. World Class in August 1986 was a great television territory living on fumes and family names.

Watts had rebranded Mid-South as the Universal Wrestling Federation in March and was trying to go national on syndication. August was Freebirds month: Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts against Watts, Ted DiBiase, Terry Taylor, and whoever else the Cowboy threw in. Jim Duggan versus the One Man Gang was the working-class brawl. The tag titles told the future more clearly than the heavyweight picture. The Fantastics, Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers, had lost the belts to Eddie Gilbert and Sting on July 20. The titles were held up after an August 17 match. Gilbert and Sting won the rematch on August 31 in Tulsa. Steve Borden was not yet a franchise. He was a painted young heel with a great look and a manager who could talk. Jim Ross was on the calls. Missy Hyatt and Dark Journey gave the shows a soap-opera sheen Watts both used and resented. The UWF was the last serious attempt by an old territorial promoter to beat McMahon at distribution. It would last until the 1987 sale to Crockett.

Memphis, under Jerry Jarrett and Jerry Lawler, kept doing what Memphis did. Lawler was the king of the Mid-South Coliseum. Bam Bam Bigelow was in the mix by early September; the August television and house-show grind still ran on Lawler, Austin Idol, Dutch Mantell, the local tag scene, and the Saturday morning WMC-TV show with Lance Russell and Dave Brown.

Florida Championship Wrestling was a Gordon Solie territory in late middle age, with Lex Luger as the 1986 rookie of the year in the magazines, Barry and Kendall Windham, the Fabulous Ones, and a Battle of the Belts III booked for September 1 in Daytona Beach. Portland, Hawaii’s Polynesian promotion, and the remnants of Central States and Continental still ran towns. They were no longer setting the agenda.

Canada: A Stadium Win and Two Territories in Retreat

The Big Event was a Canadian show in the sense that it happened in Toronto. It was a WWF show in every other sense. Maple Leaf Wrestling as a distinct Tunney promotion had already been absorbed. Ten days after the stadium date the WWF would put 13,000 back into Maple Leaf Gardens for Hogan and Piper against Orndorff and Adonis. That is what a conquered market looks like: the invader runs the fairgrounds and the old building in the same fortnight.

Stampede Wrestling, sold to the WWF in 1984 and bought back in 1985, was in its second life under Bruce Hart. August cards filled the prairie circuit—Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer—and the undercard was the point. Owen Hart and Ben Bassarab held the International Tag Team titles. The Viet Cong Express, which included a masked Hiroshi Hase, were the foreign heels. Gama Singh’s Karachi Vice gave the shows a stable. Brian Pillman was in the mix. Chris Benoit was coming. Stampede in August 1986 was a developmental territory that did not yet know it was a developmental territory. It still thought it was a business.

Lutte Internationale in Montreal was in worse shape. The Rougeau brothers and King Tonga had already gone to the WWF. Dino Bravo was preparing to sell his piece and follow. Rick Martel and Gino Brito were trying to hold a French-language promotion together while the Forum dates and the television window slipped. Late-August cards at the Paul Sauvé Arena still had Abdullah the Butcher, Samu, Steve Strong, and the occasional Japanese junior. The direction of traffic was one way.

Mexico: Arena México on Friday Nights

Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre did not pause because Hulkamania was selling out Toronto. Friday nights at Arena México and Tuesdays and Sundays at Arena Coliseo were the calendar. On August 15 at Arena México, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. retained the NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship against Máscara Año 2000 with a martinete. The same card, La Fiera beat Babe Face in a hair-versus-hair match. Los Misioneros de la Muerte—El Signo, Negro Navarro, El Texano—were the rudo trio the building wanted to see lose their hair, which is exactly the match EMLL would book for the 53rd Anniversary Show on September 19. El Dandy took the NWA World Welterweight Championship on August 24. Fuerza Guerrera had left the company; the Mexican National Welterweight Title was vacated on August 1. Alfonso Dantés would pick up the Mexican National Heavyweight Title in Acapulco on August 20.

The Universal Wrestling Association ran its own circuit the same month, with Dos Caras as the heavyweight face of that rival office. Lucha libre in August 1986 was not an export product in the WWF sense. It was a capital-city ritual with its own championship lineages, its own anniversary calendar, and a deep enough roster that a title change and a cabellera in the same week did not empty the building.

Japan: Summer Tours, Title Changes, and Two Companies

New Japan’s Burning Spirit in Summer tour spilled into the first week of August and closed in Nagoya on August 7. Antonio Inoki beat Steve Williams in Sakai on August 5. That same night, Akira Maeda and Osamu Kido took the IWGP Tag Team Championship from Tatsumi Fujinami and Kengo Kimura. Nobuhiko Takada was IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and defending against Shiro Koshinaka and, later in the month, Black Tiger. Challenge Spirit opened August 29 at Korakuen Hall. The foreign side of the tours included Williams, Bad News Allen, Alexis Smirnoff, and the usual midcard Americans. Keiji Mutoh was on the cards. The junior division was already a second main event.

All Japan was in the middle of Summer Action Series II. Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu were the heavyweight spine. Riki Choshu, now in All Japan with Yoshiaki Yatsu after the Ishin Gundan exodus from New Japan, was the rival pole. Stan Hansen had taken the NWA International Heavyweight Championship from Tsuruta on July 31 and was the gaijin wrecking ball for the summer. Giant Baba’s office did not chase American television. It chased Budokan and the provinces and the idea that a tag match between Tsuruta and Tenryu and Choshu and Yatsu was a sufficient reason to buy a ticket.

All Japan Women’s ran its own August, including Devil Masami defending the WWWA World Title against Yukari Omori in Kawasaki on August 23. Joshi was a parallel industry with its own champions and its own audience. It barely registered in the American magazines that still treated “wrestling” as a synonym for the WWF and the NWA.

Stage 7: Business Analysis

August 1986 is the month the industry’s new economics became visible without a WrestleMania logo on the poster.

First, scale had separated from tradition.

The Big Event was a house show with a fairground landlord, local radio and beer sponsors, and a world champion who won by disqualification. It drew a paid crowd larger than most territorial promotions would see in a year and a gate that approached a million Canadian dollars. WWF revenue for the full year 1986 would land around $77 million, up from $63 million in 1985 and $29.5 million in 1984. Those numbers were not produced by better wrestling. They were produced by national television, a Saturday-morning cartoon that turned wrestlers into toys, a merchandising operation that sold the T-shirt as hard as the ticket, and a touring loop that could put Hogan in Detroit on the 1st, the Meadowlands on the 4th, Miami on the 6th, and a Toronto stadium on the 28th without changing the match.

Second, the only American promotion that looked like a peer competitor was Crockett, and even Crockett was a different business.

TBS gave JCP a national signal. The Bash tour was an attempt to turn that signal into stadium and ballpark gates in the South and Mid-Atlantic. Twelve thousand in Atlanta to close the tour was a good night and not a Toronto night. The product was superior as wrestling—Flair versus anyone, Magnum versus Nikita, Midnight Express versus Rock ’n’ Roll Express, the Horsemen as a unit—and inferior as a consumer-goods company. Crockett still thought like a territory that had gotten rich. McMahon thought like a company that had gotten national.

Third, the territorial middle was in liquidation even when the buildings were full.

Watts spent real money to put the UWF on stations outside the old Mid-South footprint. Sting and Gilbert as tag champions in late August is a creative success and a financial warning: the promotion was building stars on a national idea it could not afford. The AWA had ESPN and not enough live gates. World Class had syndication and a dying family business. Memphis and Florida could still draw locally because Lawler and Solie’s towns still believed in their local champions. Belief is not a distribution strategy. When the WWF or Crockett wanted a body, they took it. The Rougeaus, Tonga, eventually Bravo, the Road Warriors’ freelance appearances, Magnum’s entire ceiling—every one of those stories is a labor-market story. The old NWA courtesy of not raiding a brother’s city was gone.

Fourth, Canada was not a foreign market. It was the WWF’s easiest annexation.

Toronto proved the stadium model. Montreal proved the talent-raid model. Calgary proved that a promotion could survive as a feeder if it accepted a smaller ceiling. The Hart house still produced wrestlers. It no longer produced a regional monopoly.

Fifth, Mexico and Japan were not behind. They were elsewhere.

EMLL’s August was a championship defense, a hair match, and a runway to the anniversary show. New Japan’s August was an IWGP tag title change and Inoki against a young American who could actually wrestle. All Japan’s August was Hansen and the Tsuruta–Choshu war. Those companies did not need Hulkamania to sell out. They also did not have a path to the American child’s allowance. The globalization of wrestling as a single television product was still decades away. In August 1986 the world was still three worlds that traded talent and ignored each other’s television.

Sixth, risk was concentrating.

Magnum T.A. was the NWA’s next world champion in every conversation that was not about Flair. The seventh match in Charlotte made Nikita the U.S. Champion and left Magnum as the wounded hero who would come back. He would not, not as a wrestler, after October 14. Kerry Von Erich was already on a motorcycle and a clock. Mike Von Erich was back from an illness that should have ended the act. The WWF’s risk was different and mostly legal and medical in slow motion: steroid culture, a crushing travel schedule, a children’s brand built on men who did not live like cartoons. August did not expose those risks. It papered them over with gates.

Seventh—and this is the Stage 7 point—the summer of 1986 was the last moment when a serious person could still argue that the territory system and the national system would coexist.

By Labor Day the evidence was in. One company could put 60,000 people in a football stadium for a disqualification. One company could run thirteen cities in a month and change the world title twice. Everyone else was either a cable alternative, a local habit, a foreign tradition, or a liquidation sale that had not been announced yet. Starrcade in November would be Crockett’s answer, a closed-circuit double site in Greensboro and Atlanta. WrestleMania III was already the next mountain McMahon was going to climb. August was the month in between, when the numbers got too large to ignore and the smaller offices kept taping television as if the map had not changed.

The wrestlers who mattered that month were the ones who could work both maps: Hogan, who had become a consumer product; Flair, who had remained a wrestler; Savage, who was about to become both; Magnum, who was about to be removed from the board; Sting, who did not yet know what he was; Owen Hart and Pillman, who were still learning in Calgary; Rayo de Jalisco Jr., who was defending an NWA title the American offices barely mentioned; Inoki and Tsuruta, who did not need the American offices at all. Professional wrestling in August 1986 was bigger than it had ever been and smaller than it pretended. The big part was in Toronto and on TBS and on Saturday morning. The small part was everywhere else, still selling tickets, still telling stories, already on borrowed time.

August 1956 offers one of the clearest windows into what the NWA World Heavyweight Championship meant during the Territory Era. Whipper Billy Watson had been champion for less than five months, but by August he was no longer simply the man who had taken the championship from Lou Thesz. He was carrying the most important championship in the territorial wrestling system across North America, appearing in the major markets of Canada and the United States and allowing local promoters to borrow the credibility of a recognized world champion while continuing to build their own stars.

August 1976 offers one of the clearest snapshots of the National Wrestling Alliance operating at the height of the territorial era while simultaneously entering its second year of fragmentation. In the terminology of the seven-stage model, this was Year Two, Month Eight of Stage 6: Fragmentation (1975–1985). The wrestling business was becoming increasingly divided into powerful regional promotions, each with its own stars, television programs, audiences and promotional identities. Yet the NWA World Heavyweight Championship still possessed the extraordinary ability to connect those territories.

July-September

American Wrestling Association (AWA)

Minneapolis, Minnesota Office

The American Wrestling Association entered the third quarter of 1976 as a mature Midwestern powerhouse still operating at the peak of the territorial system. Verne Gagne’s Minneapolis-based office controlled Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, the Dakotas, and Winnipeg. Television from Minneapolis and Moline sold the circuit. The year was the first full calendar year of Nick Bockwinkel’s world title reign after he ended Gagne’s seven-year championship on November 8, 1975 in St. Paul, and that change still defined every main-event conversation in the territory.

What follows is an analysis of the wrestlers, matches, angles, storylines, and business of July through September 1976.

The champion and the office

Bockwinkel was the axis of the company. At forty-one he was a polished technician who sold himself as the smartest wrestler alive. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan managed him. The champion did not work a death-match style. He worked long, methodical matches, stole finishes, took frequent disqualifications against bigger babyfaces, and talked down to the crowd. That formula kept the belt on him while still giving fans a reason to buy tickets: they believed Crusher, Bruiser, Verne Gagne, or a special attraction might finally catch him.

The Heenan Family around him was the quarter’s real booking engine. Blackjack Lanza and “Big Bad” Bobby Duncum were the muscle. Heenan himself wrestled when the office needed extra heat. Ray Stevens made at least one July appearance in Milwaukee, losing to Mad Dog Vachon, a reminder that the old Bockwinkel–Stevens tag partnership still lived in the territory’s memory even if Stevens was not a weekly fixture that summer.

Opposite them stood the promotion’s traditional blue-collar heroes. The Crusher (Reggie Lisowski) and Dick the Bruiser remained the biggest drawing babyfaces in Milwaukee and Chicago. Larry “The Axe” Hennig and Jos Leduc formed a second heavy tag unit. Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell—the High Flyers—were the athletic, younger face team being built for the next decade. Peter Maivia, still billed as Chief Peter Maivia, worked a strong upper-midcard program, usually against Kim Duk. Mad Dog Vachon and Baron von Raschke were the other heel pair, more chaotic than Lanza and Duncum, and they spent the summer in lumberjack matches and disqualification wars with Hennig, Leduc, and the High Flyers.

Verne Gagne, now promoter first and wrestler second, appeared as a special attraction rather than a weekly worker. That scarcity was the point. When he challenged Bockwinkel, the buildings treated it as an event.

July: the tag titles change hands

July opened with the standard AWA loop. Dixon, Brainerd, Winnipeg, Milwaukee, Omaha, Davenport, Denver, St. Paul, Green Bay, and Chicago all ran variations of the same programs. Six-man tags mixed Bockwinkel with Lanza and Duncum against Hennig and the High Flyers. Lumberjack matches between Hennig/Leduc and Vachon/von Raschke traveled from Winnipeg to Omaha to Denver. The High Flyers repeatedly beat Lanza and Duncum in two-out-of-three-falls matches in Milwaukee, Omaha, Davenport, and Green Bay—important because those wins established the Flyers as credible before the belts moved.

The quarter’s first major title change came on July 23 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago. Lanza and Duncum defeated Crusher and Bruiser for the AWA World Tag Team Championship. The belts had been on Crusher and Bruiser since August 16, 1975. Putting them on Heenan’s power team immediately created a long-term program: the new champions could defend against the old champions, against Hennig and Leduc, and against the High Flyers without the office having to invent a new heel unit.

Bockwinkel’s July title defenses were typical of the reign. He beat Buddy Wolff in Milwaukee and St. Paul, beat Wilbur Snyder in Chicago the night the tags changed, took a disqualification win over von Raschke in Omaha, and pinned Vachon in Davenport. He also beat Vachon by disqualification in Green Bay. The pattern was deliberate. Clean pins were reserved for midcard challengers. Against the names that sold tickets, the champion usually needed Heenan, a rope break, or a referee’s decision.
Television remained the weekly engine. Minneapolis All-Star Wrestling and the Moline tapings (often billed as World Championship Wrestling) fed jobber matches, interviews, and short programs that justified the next house-show loop. Bockwinkel squashing Kenny Jay or Buck Zumhofe on TV was not filler. It was the champion’s weekly reminder that he was still the man.

August: Comiskey Park and the old champion returns

August raised the scale. On August 4 in Peoria, Bruiser beat Bockwinkel by disqualification. On August 12 in Cambridge, Iowa, Crusher did the same. Those DQ losses were not accidents. They built the idea that the brawlers could hang with the champion if the referee would let them. The same week, Lanza and Duncum began defending the new tag titles against Hennig and Leduc in Milwaukee and Green Bay and against Crusher and Bruiser in Davenport and Winnipeg.

Special attractions arrived. Wahoo McDaniel challenged Bockwinkel on August 21 in Milwaukee and lost. Russ Francis, then a young football-to-wrestling crossover, beat Kim Duk on the same card. Milwaukee drew 5,725 that night. Winnipeg on August 19 drew a reported 9,248 for a card headlined by Lanza and Duncum versus Crusher and Bruiser (the champions winning by disqualification after Bruiser manhandled the referee) and Bockwinkel pinning Greg Gagne.

The summer’s showcase was August 27 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Reported attendance was 15,000, one of the AWA’s larger outdoor gates of the decade and the third-largest Comiskey Park wrestling crowd of the era behind the 1970 Gagne–von Raschke show and the 1974 Gagne–Robinson show. The card mixed local Chicago flavor with AWA main-eventers:
• Bounty Hunter II over Bobby Bold Eagle
• Pepper Gomez over Johnny Starr
• Art Thomas over Bounty Hunter I by disqualification
• Peter Maivia over Kim Duk
• Moose Cholak over Buddy Wolff
• High Flyers and Wilbur Snyder over Vachon, von Raschke, and Ox Baker
• Bockwinkel versus André the Giant, no contest by double disqualification, title retained
• Steel cage: Lanza and Duncum retain the tag titles over Crusher and Bruiser

The André match was a special attraction, not a long program. André was already a touring giant; putting him in with the world champion on a baseball stadium card was the AWA version of a summer blockbuster. The cage match was the real story. Crusher and Bruiser had lost the belts in the same city five weeks earlier. A cage removed Heenan from the apron and forced a finish. The heels kept the titles. That decision kept the program alive into the fall instead of giving the old champions a cheap hometown win.

The next two nights Verne Gagne returned to the title picture. St. Paul on August 28 drew 6,641 for Bockwinkel versus Gagne, which ended in a no contest. Green Bay the following night ran the same match to another no contest. Denver had advertised the pairing on August 20. The office was using Gagne the way a later era would use a part-time legend: scarce, protected, and always close enough to the title to make the next date feel important.

September: six-mans, Heenan in the ring, and the loop continues

September did not produce another stadium show, but it tightened the existing programs. On September 6 in Davenport, Crusher again beat Bockwinkel by disqualification. On September 11 in Milwaukee, Vachon and von Raschke went to a no contest with the High Flyers, while a six-man of Maivia, Hennig, and Crusher beat Bockwinkel, Lanza, and Duncum two falls to one in 27:45. Those six-mans were the AWA’s favorite way to put the champion in a match he could lose without dropping the belt.

Winnipeg on September 16 gave the babyfaces a clean moral victory. The High Flyers beat Vachon and von Raschke when Greg Gagne pinned Vachon in 27:00. Verne Gagne then pinned Heenan in 8:45 under a stipulation that Gagne had to beat the manager inside ten minutes or lose. Putting Heenan in the ring was a heat device the office used sparingly. Fans wanted to see the mouthpiece get his, and a short, decisive pin by the promoter himself was cheap heat that cost nothing on the title picture.
Chicago on September 18 saw Bockwinkel beat Bruiser by disqualification, reversing the Peoria result from six weeks earlier. The champion was again protected. Midcard names such as Billy Francis (Pat Leahy) began appearing more often in August and September, including a television draw with Bockwinkel, a sign the office was testing another heavyweight body against the champion for later loops.

By the end of the quarter the championships had not moved again. Bockwinkel was still champion. Lanza and Duncum were still tag champions. The programs were designed to last into the winter loop, not to climax in September.

Wrestler analysis

The heels draw the money.

Heel stables, if they are elite, lik ethe Heenan Family in 1976, draw a lot of money.

Nick Bockwinkel was the best worker on the roster and the best talker after Heenan. His reign depended on credibility. He could go twenty minutes with André, survive Bruiser and Crusher, and still look like a champion when he beat Buddy Wolff or Greg Gagne clean. The frequent DQs were a booking crutch, but they fit the character: the smartest wrestler alive was also the one most willing to break a rule if the title was at risk.

Bobby Heenan was the glue. He managed the world champion and both tag champions. When he wrestled, it was as a coward who could still win by disqualification (as he did over Buddy Wolff in Milwaukee on July 31) or as a sacrificial lamb for Verne Gagne. His interference angles—backfiring in Winnipeg when Crusher pinned Duncum—gave babyfaces wins without weakening the heel wrestlers.

Blackjack Lanza and Bobby Duncum were a well-chosen champion team. Lanza had the veteran presence and the “Blackjack” brand from earlier years. Duncum was the brawling Texan, a prototype for the cowboy heels who would follow. Together they could work a cage, a two-out-of-three-falls match, or a six-man. They were not as over as Crusher and Bruiser, which is why they needed the belts and Heenan.

The Crusher and Dick the Bruiser were still the territory’s emotional core, especially in Milwaukee and Chicago. Their style was limited—punches, stomps, no-rope brawling—but it matched the audience. Losing the tag titles in July and the cage match in August did not hurt them. It gave them a grudge. Bruiser beating Bockwinkel by DQ in Peoria and Crusher doing the same in Cambridge and Davenport kept both men in the world-title conversation without putting the belt on a part-time brawler.

The High Flyers were the future the office was planting in 1976. Greg Gagne had the name and the amateur base. Jim Brunzell had the dropkick and the likeability. They beat Lanza and Duncum repeatedly before the title change, went to no contests with Vachon and von Raschke, and worked six-mans with Wilbur Snyder and Verne. They would not win the tag titles until July 1977, but the third quarter of 1976 is when the team was clearly positioned as the next babyface champions.

Larry Hennig and Jos Leduc filled the “tough guys who can hang with the monsters” role. Their lumberjack matches with Vachon and von Raschke were a traveling specialty. Hennig’s “Axe” identity still meant something in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Peter Maivia was used as a reliable win machine against Kim Duk, Buddy Wolff, and midcard heels, and as a partner in six-mans with Crusher and Verne. He was over enough to main-event smaller towns and to look credible in Chicago.

Mad Dog Vachon and Baron von Raschke provided a second heel texture. Vachon was the biting, clawing veteran. Von Raschke’s claw hold gave television a visual finish. They lost as often as they won, which is how the office kept the High Flyers and Hennig/Leduc strong.

André the Giant and Wahoo McDaniel were short-term attractions. André’s Comiskey Park double DQ with Bockwinkel was a spectacle. Wahoo’s Milwaukee loss to the champion was a one-night name-value booking. Neither man was being built as a long-term AWA resident that quarter.

Matches and angles

The AWA in 1976 still believed in two-out-of-three-falls tag matches, lumberjack matches, judo-jacket matches, Indian chain matches, and the occasional steel cage. The cage at Comiskey Park was the quarter’s biggest stipulation. Most title matches still ended in disqualification, count-out, or no contest. That was not incompetence. It was how a territory with a long-reigning champion and a weekly television show stretched programs across a dozen towns.
Recurring angles:

Heenan on the apron, getting caught, costing his man the match or causing a DQ.
Six-man tags that let Bockwinkel lose without dropping the title.
Babyface teams winning the first or second fall and losing the third on a foul.
Verne Gagne appearing just often enough to make “Gagne versus Bockwinkel” a live question.
Crusher or Bruiser “almost” beating the champion, always stopped by the referee. The booking was conservative. No one turned. No one was fired in an angle. The moral universe was stable: Heenan’s men cheated, the Midwestern heroes bled, and the title stayed put until the office was ready.

Business analysis

The AWA in Q3 1976 was not in crisis.

It was a profitable regional company with a clear hierarchy and a proven touring model.

Geography and buildings.

The money towns were Chicago (Amphitheatre and Comiskey Park), Milwaukee, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Winnipeg, and Denver. Omaha and the Iowa loop (Davenport, Peoria, Burlington, Cambridge) were secondary.

Omaha’s July 13 crowd of 1,946 shows the gap between a Civic Auditorium Tuesday and a Chicago stadium Friday.

Milwaukee’s 5,725 on August 21 and St. Paul’s 6,641 on August 28 were solid mid-tier gates.

Winnipeg’s 9,248 on August 19 shows how well the Canadian date still paid.

Comiskey Park’s 15,000 was the quarter’s profit center and a statement that the AWA could still fill a major-league ballpark without a world-title change.

Television.

Two taping hubs—Minneapolis and Moline—kept the product on the air across the territory. The shows were short, interview-heavy, and built around the next house-show main events. That model was cheap to produce and effective at driving ticket sales. There was no national cable play yet. The AWA did not need one in 1976. Talent costs and structure. The roster mixed homegrown names (the Gagnes, Crusher, Hennig, Brunzell) with veterans who could work any Midwestern town (Lanza, Duncum, Vachon, von Raschke, Maivia, Snyder). Special attractions—André, Wahoo, Russ Francis, Moose Cholak, Art Thomas—were booked for the big Chicago date and a few surrounding shows.

That is how a territory controlled payroll: the regulars worked the loop; the names dropped in for the stadium. Competitive position. In the summer of 1976 the WWWF still revolved around Bruno Sammartino in the Northeast. The NWA world title was on Terry Funk. The AWA’s claim to a “world” championship was taken seriously in its own footprint and respected by other offices.

Muhammad Ali’s June appearances for the AWA, tied to the Inoki closed-circuit event, had given the promotion a brief mainstream spike just before this quarter. Q3 itself was more traditional: house shows, TV tapings, one stadium date. Strategic picture. Dropping the world title from Verne Gagne to Bockwinkel in late 1975 was the most important business decision of the mid-1970s AWA.

It let Gagne promote full-time, created a hated champion who could talk, and kept Gagne himself as the ghost challenger. Q3 1976 shows that plan working. The champion was over as a heel. The tag titles had fresh champions. The High Flyers were being groomed. Chicago still drew.

The weakness, visible only in hindsight, was the reliance on disqualification finishes and on aging babyfaces. Crusher and Bruiser could still draw 15,000 in a cage, but they were not a ten-year solution. The office’s answer was already on the cards: Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell.

Conclusion

July, August, and September 1976 were not a revolutionary quarter for the AWA. They were a well-run one. The world title stayed on Nick Bockwinkel. The tag titles moved from Crusher and Bruiser to Lanza and Duncum in Chicago and were then defended in a stadium cage. Verne Gagne hovered at the edge of the title picture. The High Flyers rose. Heenan’s group absorbed the heat. Comiskey Park proved the company could still do big-event business.

The AWA of that summer was a territory that knew what it was: technical wrestling and brawling for a Midwestern audience, sold on local television, climaxed in Chicago and the Twin Cities. Within a decade the national expansion of the WWF would expose the limits of that model. In the third quarter of 1976 those limits were not yet the story. The story was a smart heel champion, a loud manager, two new tag champions, and 15,000 people in a Chicago ballpark watching a cage match and a giant.

The Life and Career of Mars Bennett

Mars Bennett, born Maude Audrey Foreit on August 3, 1922, in Michigan, lived a life that compressed more adventure into thirty-five years than most people experience in a lifetime. A high-school athlete, wartime factory worker, circus performer, pin-up model, bodybuilder, and professional wrestler, she became known as “The Girl with the Iron Jaw.” Her career ended abruptly on a Tennessee highway in the late summer of 1957, yet the intensity and range of her experiences left a distinctive mark on the women’s wrestling scene of the territorial era.

As a teenager she already showed the restlessness and physical confidence that would define her. She excelled in sports, then took a factory job building B-24 bombers during World War II. Disliking her given name, she legally changed it at seventeen to Mars Bennett and set out for the big top. She worked as a clown, animal performer, web girl, and trapeze artist, first with Clyde Beatty’s circus and later with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus—the Greatest Show on Earth. The demands of aerial work and the constant travel hardened her body and sharpened her sense of showmanship.

That same physicality drew her into bodybuilding, weightlifting, and boxing. Training at Bother’s Gymnasium in New York City, she caught the eye of magazine photographers and became a favorite of the muscle and “cheesecake” pin-up publications of the late 1940s. Photographs of her lifting men or displaying defined musculature circulated widely, presenting a strong, capable image of womanhood that stood apart from conventional glamour. Mildred Burke and Billy Wolfe recognized the potential in her athletic build and circus background. In 1950 she stepped into the professional wrestling ranks.

For the next seven years Mars Bennett worked the women’s circuits across the United States and into Canada. She faced the era’s top names—Mildred Burke, June Byers, the rising Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, Cora Combs, Penny Banner, Bonnie Watson, Ella Waldek, Theresa Theis, and others. She competed in two-out-of-three-falls singles, tag matches (often paired with June Byers), battle royals, mixed tags with male wrestlers, and Texas Death Matches. She held the Texas Women’s Championship briefly in early 1951 and the NWA Florida Women’s Championship for three weeks in February–March 1953.

Bennett’s Biggest Opponents

This is the best-documented relationship. They met early. In December 1950, Byers beat Bennett in two-out-of-three-falls matches in Joplin, Missouri, and Little Rock, Arkansas. Between those dates Bennett scored a disqualification win over Byers in Little Rock. That pattern—Byers as the more established hand, Bennett as the athletic newcomer who could steal a fall or a DQ—set the tone.

By 1956 the roles had sharpened. Byers was the recognized NWA World Women’s Champion. In mid-May she defended that title against Bennett four times in four days across Texas: Houston (May 18), Waco (May 21), Dallas (May 22), and San Antonio (May 23). The recorded finishes are clean Byers victories, including two-fall sweeps. Those were not one-off house-show fill-ins. They were a concentrated title tour with Bennett as the challenger.

At the same time they were partners. the NWA women’s tag history list June Byers and Mars Bennett as NWA World Women’s Tag Team Champions for one recognized reign, dated around August 15, 1956. In July 1956 they defended that pairing against Penny Banner and Bonnie Watson in Calgary and Edmonton. Banner and Watson took the two-out-of-three-falls matches, including billed tag-title bouts of 15:55 and 26:00.

John Cosper, who wrote biographies of both women, has said they were good friends outside the ring. A rare 36-second clip of the two wrestling each other shows them throwing one another around with real snap—friends working stiff, not strangers going through the motions. That combination—title challenger, tag partner, and personal friend—makes Byers the central “rivalry” of Bennett’s career.

Bennett and Banner’s documented clashes are mostly tag matches, not a long singles series. The July 1956 Alberta cards put Banner and Bonnie Watson against Byers and Bennett three times in two weeks. Banner’s side won all three. Banner was already Byers’ most respected singles rival of that period; Byers later named Banner among her toughest opponents. Bennett was the partner Byers brought into that program. In other words, Banner was Bennett’s opponent because Bennett was standing next to the champion.

Banner also appears in the broader women’s-title picture Bennett was circling in May 1956, when Bennett won #1 contendership matches in Texas just before the Byers title defenses. The records do not show a deep Bennett–Banner singles feud, but they show repeated, high-level tag work against Banner’s team at the exact moment Bennett was being used as a world-title challenger.

Slave Girl Moolah (Lillian Ellison, later the Fabulous Moolah) — partner more than rival

The surviving 1953 Texas results put Bennett and Moolah on the same side, not opposite each other. In August 1953 they teamed in Dallas and San Antonio against Daisy Mae, Princess Maritza, and Darling Dagmar in two-woman tags and three-on-two handicap matches. Results went both ways. This is Moolah’s “Slave Girl Moolah” period, still years before the 1956 battle royal that made her the NWA’s dominant women’s champion.

Book blurbs list Moolah among the champions Bennett “went toe to toe with.” That is plausible on the circuit, but the match database that is public today shows them as tag partners in Texas rather than a documented singles program. By the time Moolah became the face of the NWA women’s title in late 1956, Bennett had less than a year to live and was working Mid-America and Florida more than the offices Moolah would later control.

Cora Combs — early Texas opponent and battle-royal peer

The earliest clear singles result is January 4, 1951, in Galveston: Mars Bennett defeated Cora Combs. The same Texas swing has Bennett and Millie Stafford beating Combs and Nell Stewart on January 11 in Galveston, and Combs and Stewart beating Bennett’s side on another card that week. Combs was a regular in Wolfe’s group and later one of the names June Byers herself listed among her toughest opponents (with Penny Banner and Lilly Bitter).

They also shared multi-woman matches. On November 24, 1952, at Ellis Auditorium in Memphis, Bennett won a five-woman battle royal that included Cora Combs, Carol Carota, Donna Marie Dieckman, and Dot Dotson. That is typical of how women’s cards were built: the same core group rotating through singles, tags, and royals rather than one exclusive feud.

Mae Young — named as an opponent; fewer dated singles on the public lists

Cosper’s book and the promotional copy for it state that Bennett wrestled Mae Young. Young was already a veteran when Bennett debuted in 1950 and had been inaugural NWA Women’s Tag champion with Ella Waldek in 1952. Specific dated Bennett–Young singles results are thinner in the public Cagematch extracts than the Byers and Combs dates. That does not mean they never met; it means the surviving newspaper and office records that have been entered online have not preserved a long string of Bennett–Young main events the way they preserved the 1956 Byers title loop.

Young’s place in Bennett’s story is still important. She trained or finished many of the women Bennett worked with, including Byers. She was part of the same Wolfe-era locker room. Battle royals and mixed cards of 1950–53 almost certainly put them in the same building even when a one-on-one result was not written down.

Mildred Burke — the champion who opened the door, and the name used as a comparison

Burke and Billy Wolfe are the reason Bennett got into the business. Promoters used Bennett’s muscular build and resemblance to Burke as a selling point. The standard line in later writing is that Bennett “feared no woman or man” and went “toe to toe” with Burke. That is consistent with how Wolfe booked new athletic women against the champion and the top heels.

What is missing is a thick file of dated Burke–Bennett title matches comparable to the May 1956 Byers series. Burke was still the dominant world champion when Bennett arrived in 1950. By 1953–54 the Burke–Wolfe marriage and business had exploded, Byers had been pushed as the new standard-bearer, and Burke was moving toward California and her own claim. Bennett’s peak as a title challenger on the public record is 1956—against Byers, after Burke’s Atlanta match with Byers had already split the championship picture.

So the Burke “rivalry” is real in the sense that Bennett was brought in under Burke’s system, compared to her physically, and worked in the same championship ecosystem. It is less a recorded series of Burke-vs-Bennett main events than a structural relationship: new muscle girl vs. the queen who defined the division.

How these names actually fit together

The pattern is not six separate blood feuds. It is one circuit:

• Burke and Wolfe created the office.

• Mae Young and Cora Combs were established hands Bennett had to beat or survive early (1950–52).

• Moolah, still Slave Girl Moolah, was a tag partner in Texas in 1953.

• Byers became both Bennett’s most frequent high-profile opponent and her tag-title partner.

• Banner was the top name on the other side of those 1956 tag-title matches.

Bennett’s role was the athletic, circus-strong middle-to-upper card who could lose clean to the champion in Houston and San Antonio, win a battle royal in Memphis, team with Moolah in Dallas, and stand next to Byers against Banner in Calgary—all in the same career. That is how women’s wrestling worked before television packaged exclusive rivalries. The records that survive put June Byers at the center of Bennett’s in-ring story, with Banner as the principal opposing star of her last full year, and Burke, Young, Combs, and Moolah as the champions and locker-room fixtures she had to work with to belong on those cards at all.

Promoters valued her reliability and toughness; one lasting story recalls her absorbing a legitimate punch from Dory Funk Sr. during a mixed or exhibition bout. She worked Florida, Texas, the Western States, the northern territories, and the Mid-America circuit that included Tennessee and Alabama towns. Her final recorded matches came in Anniston, Alabama, only days before her death.

Off the road she formed a lasting partnership with fellow wrestler Belle Drummond. The two shared a home, a car, dogs, and the demanding life of the territories at a time when such relationships were kept largely private. She had been engaged twice earlier—once to a jeweler and once to comedian Larry Storch before his television fame—but the bond with Drummond endured. Family later confirmed the relationship and noted that Drummond’s daughter was named Mars Belle in her honor.

On Friday, August 23, 1957, at approximately 4 p.m., that road life ended. Mars Bennett was driving a station wagon westbound on Highway 70 South, about ten miles west of Nashville, Tennessee, at the foot of Nine Mile Hill. She and her two passengers were headed to Greenfield, Tennessee, for a tag-team wrestling match. Riding with her were Patricia Penry, twenty-one, who wrestled as Belle Starr, and Johnny Wilder, twenty-seven, who performed as Larry Clark.

On a curve, witnesses said Bennett’s station wagon veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with an eastbound trailer truck driven by Bryant Earnest Landis Jr., thirty-five, of Woodbine. The station wagon spun slightly and left the roadway to the right but did not overturn. Passersby pulled Bennett from behind the steering wheel; she was already dead. Penry, found lying outside the car, suffered a broken left collarbone along with cuts and bruises. Wilder, who had been in the rear seat and could not move his legs, sustained back and leg injuries. Both were treated at St. Thomas Hospital and later reported in good condition. Landis was not charged.

Bennett’s body was taken to the Pettus, Owen & Wood Funeral Home on Charlotte Avenue in Nashville. Services were arranged for the following day, after which the remains were to be sent to Detroit for cremation. Her mother, Mrs. Loa Shiles Diers of New York, was notified and traveled to Nashville. Contemporary reports listed Bennett’s address as 2787 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, Florida, and noted her earlier work as a trapeze artist. Her ashes were ultimately scattered over the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast by her mother; a marker was placed at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.

Mars Bennett never reached the household fame of Burke, Byers, or Moolah, yet she embodied a particular strain of the 1950s women’s division: the circus-trained, muscle-magazine athlete who could deliver in every style of match the territories demanded. She traveled from Florida to Canada, worked the rough Southern and Texas cards as readily as the more athletic northern programs, and lived the full, often hidden life of the road. The newspaper accounts of her final afternoon—heading to one more tag match, driving the station wagon, crossing the center line on a curve outside Nashville—bring a sharp human focus to a career that had already contained more than most. In the end, the Girl with the Iron Jaw left the ring the same way she had lived much of her life: in motion, on the highway, between towns.

Tracking The World Champions: Terry Funk, NWA World Heavyweight Champion, August 1976

No wrestler demonstrated that better in August 1976 than Terry Funk.

Funk had been NWA World Heavyweight Champion since December 10, 1975, when he defeated Jack Brisco in Miami. By August, his reign had become established enough that he was no longer simply the new champion being introduced to the wrestling world. He was the traveling representative of the NWA, carrying its most prestigious championship from territory to territory and defending it against the wrestler each market believed was capable of challenging for the world’s championship.

What makes August remarkable is the sheer variety of the territories Funk visited and, even more importantly, the thought that went into selecting his opponents. The challengers were not interchangeable. They were selected because they meant something in the particular markets in which Funk appeared. The month therefore becomes a remarkable demonstration of how the NWA World Championship worked in practice.

The champion traveled. The territories remained distinct. The local stars remained local stars. But the championship tied the entire system together.

The World Champion Goes on the Road: Central States

Funk opened the month in the Central States territory, working four dates from August 2 through August 5 in Wichita, Des Moines, Trenton, Missouri, and Kansas City. His opponents included Bob Brown and Harley Race.

Harley Race’s presence immediately gave the defenses additional significance. Race was not simply a prominent regional wrestler. He was one of the most important wrestlers in the NWA system and a former World Champion who would eventually become one of the defining champions of the territorial era.

The Life and Career of Bob Armstrong

Bob Armstrong was one of the defining babyfaces of Southeastern professional wrestling during the territorial era. A former Marine and firefighter who became a working-class hero in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and surrounding states, he built a career spanning nearly six decades on toughness, microphone skill, loyalty, and an unshakable connection to Southern fans. He was also the patriarch of one of wrestling’s most notable families.

Joseph Melton James was born in Marietta, Georgia. As a boy his father took him to see Gorgeous George, an experience that left a lasting impression. Nicknamed “Pep” for his boundless energy, James served in the United States Marine Corps in the early 1960s, stationed in Korea, and was named Honor Man of his platoon during recruit training at Parris Island. After his service he joined the Fair Oaks (later Cobb County) Fire Department in 1962 and worked as a firefighter while beginning his wrestling career.

He debuted in 1960 under the ring name Bob Armstrong (inspired in part by the old radio serial Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy and his own muscular build). Early on he was often billed as “the wrestling fireman from Marietta, Georgia.” By 1966 he had become a popular draw in the Savannah area. Around 1969–1970 he left firefighting to wrestle full time.

Rise in the Territories

Armstrong made his deepest mark in National Wrestling Alliance territories, especially Georgia Championship Wrestling and the Alabama/Tennessee-based Southeastern Championship Wrestling (later Continental Championship Wrestling). Standing about 5’11” and billed at 227 pounds, he was never the largest man on the card, but he projected power, tenacity, and credibility. His style mixed solid technical wrestling with brawling, strong psychology, and fiery promos that resonated with blue-collar audiences. His signature finish was the Georgia Jawbreaker (sometimes called the Jaw Jacker).

Bob Armstrong’s singles championship record was built almost entirely on the regional NWA titles that defined the Southeastern territories. He never held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, though he challenged Jack Brisco for it in Miami Beach in October 1974 and later won a number-one contendership tournament. His success instead came through consistent, hard-earned runs as a top babyface across Georgia, Florida, Mid-America, and especially the Alabama-Tennessee circuit.

In Georgia Championship Wrestling during the early-to-mid 1970s, Armstrong established himself as a reliable main-event attraction. He captured the NWA Columbus Heavyweight Championship four times (some records suggest as many as seven), becoming the title’s most frequent holder, with one reign stretching 131 days. He also won the NWA Macon Heavyweight Championship on three occasions—most notably a 147-day run that began with a victory over Buddy Colt in September 1973, followed by shorter reigns in 1974 and a brief nine-day hold in 1975. That same December 1972 victory over Colt also gave him the Georgia version of the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship for roughly two weeks. Additional Georgia hardware included the North American Heavyweight Championship in June 1974 (again over Colt) and at least one reign with the NWA Georgia Television Championship.

Armstrong’s Florida push under Bill Watts produced two reigns with the Florida version of the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship. The confirmed highlight came on February 18, 1975, when he defeated The Mongolian Stomper in a steel-cage match in Tampa and held the belt for two weeks.

In the Tennessee and Memphis territories between 1975 and 1977, he worked as a top babyface opposite Jerry Lawler and The Mongolian Stomper. He held the NWA Mid-America Heavyweight Championship at least twice in the summer and fall of 1976, and captured the Memphis/Mid-America version of the Southern Heavyweight Championship three or four times, including notable wins over Stomper in October 1975 and Lawler later that year and again in April 1977.

The most prolific stretch of Armstrong’s singles career unfolded in Southeastern Championship Wrestling and its Continental successor from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. He became the inaugural champion of the Southern Division of the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship on March 10, 1978, by defeating David Schultz in Dothan, Alabama, and traded the belt multiple times with Ron Fuller and The Mongolian Stomper over the next two years.

Across both the Southern and Northern/unified versions of the Southeastern title, sources credit him with eight or nine reigns in total. Highlights included a Christmas 1979 victory over Sterling Golden (Hulk Hogan), wins over Jos LeDuc, Austin Idol, Jimmy Golden, and Ken Lucas in 1982–83, and a tournament victory in December 1983. He also held the NWA Alabama Heavyweight Championship three to five times, including a tournament win around November 1980 and a 119-day reign as The Bullet in 1987, plus three or four reigns with the Continental Heavyweight Championship between 1984 and 1986.

Even in the later independent years, Armstrong continued collecting singles gold. As The Bullet he won the SCW Heavyweight Championship for two weeks in September 1988 and held the USA Heavyweight Championship once or twice that same year.

Taken together, Armstrong’s singles title history reflects more than twenty documented reigns across the major Southeastern belts. These were classic territorial workhorse championships rather than national television prizes, yet they kept him in main events for well over a decade and cemented his status as one of the most dependable and respected babyfaces in the region.

Tag Team Gold

In Macon he captured the NWA Macon Tag Team Championship six times, more than any other individual. His partners included Paul DeMarco in a November 1970 win over Skandor Akbar and Buddy Colt, El Mongol in a January 1971 victory over the Assassins, and especially Bill Dromo, with whom he shared multiple reigns between late 1971 and 1973. He also held the belts once with Argentina Apollo in August 1972. These Macon titles were defended almost exclusively in the Macon Coliseum and City Auditorium and formed the backbone of Armstrong’s early reputation as a reliable babyface partner.

On the broader Georgia circuit he won the NWA Georgia Tag Team Championship four times. His first reign came with Dick Steinborn in 1972; the remaining three were with longtime friend and frequent partner Robert Fuller between October 1973 and May 1975. The Armstrong-Fuller combination proved particularly effective against teams such as Bobby Duncum and Stan Vachon and the Garvin brothers. He also held the NWA Columbus Tag Team Championship once with Fuller and the Georgia version of the NWA Southeastern Tag Team Championship four times—partnering with El Mongol, Bill Dromo, and twice with Roberto Soto.

A career highlight arrived on Thanksgiving night 1981 when Armstrong teamed with his eldest son Brad to win a tournament for the vacant NWA National Tag Team Championship, defeating Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito in the final in Atlanta. The father-son duo held the prestigious belts for 57 days, collecting a $30,000 cash prize in the process.

Armstrong’s most extensive tag-team success came in Southeastern Championship Wrestling and its Continental successor. He captured the Northern Division of the NWA Southeastern Tag Team Championship eight times with an array of partners that reflected the shifting alliances of the territory: once with Ken Lucas, twice with Robert Fuller, twice with Jos LeDuc, once with son Steve, and at least twice with Brad. He also held the Southern Division version once with Fuller. In the late 1980s, working as The Bullet, he and Brad won the CWF Tag Team Championship for a 27-day reign. Armstrong further shared the NWA Six-Man Tag Team Championship (Southeastern version) with Brad and Steve.

Even in the later independent years he continued to collect tag gold, including a Global Championship Wrestling Tag Team Championship with Steve and occasional titles alongside Scott or Brad on the nostalgia circuit. Across more than three decades Armstrong’s tag-team résumé—dozens of reigns with partners ranging from territory veterans to his own sons—underscored both his longevity and his central place in the family-oriented storytelling that defined Southern wrestling.

Armstrong showed notable loyalty during the early-1970s split in the Georgia territory. When most talent sided with Ann Gunkel’s All-South Wrestling Alliance, he remained with the NWA office under promoter Paul Jones despite a substantial guaranteed offer. The decision paid off: All-South folded, and Armstrong received a strong main-event push in Atlanta, trading the Southern Heavyweight Title with Buddy Colt.

In 1974 he worked Florida under Bill Watts’s booking for Eddie Graham, capturing that territory’s Southern title and earning an NWA World Heavyweight Championship challenge against Jack Brisco on October 9 in Miami Beach. He also drew a one-hour time-limit draw with Dory Funk Jr. in Macon. In 1979 he scored a clean pinfall victory over a young Hulk Hogan to win the Southeastern Heavyweight Championship in Knoxville.

One of his most memorable programs came in the early 1980s against Roddy Piper in Georgia Championship Wrestling. Their verbal exchanges were sharp—Armstrong once answered Piper’s mockery of his thick upper body and thinner legs by noting that “jackasses don’t run with racehorses”—and the feud sold out buildings in Georgia and even in the Carolinas for Jim Crockett Promotions, often without Armstrong appearing on Mid-Atlantic television.

The Accident and “The Bullet”

In the early 1980s (commonly placed around 1983), Armstrong suffered a catastrophic weightlifting injury. While performing pullovers or a similar movement with roughly 180–185 pounds, the unsecured bench collapsed. The bar crashed onto his face, tearing his nose completely off and breaking multiple facial bones. He required extensive plastic surgery (reported costs around $38,000 at the time) and lost significant weight during recovery.

He returned wearing a mask as “The Bullet,” both to conceal the scarring and as a compelling new identity. The character allowed him a sustained main-event run in Continental Championship Wrestling, including feuds with the Stud Stable. Even after the surgeries healed and he discarded the mask, the “Bullet” nickname stuck for the rest of his career. The injury and subsequent persona extended his top-of-the-card years and became part of his legend.

Family and Later Career

Armstrong and his wife Gail (his childhood sweetheart) raised four sons—Joseph Scott (Scott Armstrong), Robert Bradley (Brad Armstrong), Steve, and Brian Girard (Brian James, better known as Road Dogg)—all of whom became professional wrestlers. Bob trained them and frequently teamed with them, winning championships together. Brad in particular became a highly regarded worker in WCW; Brian achieved major success in WWE during the Attitude Era as a member of D-Generation X and the New Age Outlaws. The Armstrongs formed one of the most successful multi-generational families in Southern wrestling.

Armstrong scaled back full-time wrestling around 1988 but remained active on the independent circuit and in key roles. Jim Cornette brought him into Smoky Mountain Wrestling in the early 1990s as a commissioner and credible figurehead who still connected with fans decades after his peak. He made sporadic appearances in WCW, the USWA, and TNA/Impact Wrestling (including storylines involving his sons and a return of the Bullet character). He continued wrestling into his late seventies.

His final match took place on May 11, 2019, for Continental Championship Wrestling in Dothan, Alabama, where he defeated The Assassin at age 79 while already dealing with cancer. In 2011 he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, recognition that celebrated both his in-ring career and his role as a respected veteran and family patriarch.

Final Years and Legacy

In March 2020 Armstrong was diagnosed with bone cancer that had spread to his ribs, shoulder, and prostate. Knowing the prognosis was terminal, he declined treatment. He died on August 27, 2020, in Pensacola, Florida, at age 80. Gail had passed only weeks earlier after nearly sixty years of marriage. He was survived by sons Scott, Steve, and Brian, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Brad had died in 2012.

Armstrong was never a national television star in the modern sense, yet within the Southeastern territories he was a genuine draw and a cultural figure—an honest, tough, no-nonsense hero who looked and talked like the people in the seats. Peers remembered him as a decent man in a hard business, a strong locker-room presence, a skilled talker, and someone who helped younger talent (including giving early opportunities that aided Arn Anderson’s career). His loyalty to promoters and the territory system, his physical toughness, and the lasting success of his sons cemented his place in wrestling history.

“Bullet” Bob Armstrong embodied the best of territorial Southern wrestling: credibility earned the hard way, a direct connection with fans, and a career measured not only in titles but in the respect he commanded for nearly sixty years.

One Thing I Learned About Cowboy Lang

He appeared in the 1976 martial arts film Black Samurai. In the movie he played a character billed as Cowboy Lang (essentially himself), appearing as one of the villain’s henchmen alongside fellow midget wrestler Little Tokyo.

Lang, a 4-foot Canadian from Saskatchewan who was raised in Alberta, debuted as a teenager in the mid-1960s after hopping a train to train under Lord Littlebrook. He went on to become a two-time NWA World Midgets Champion and worked major promotions and venues for more than 30 years, but the film credit remains one of the more obscure footnotes in his career.

Tracking The World Champions: Whipper Billy Watson, NWA World Heavyweight Title, August 1956

That is what makes Watson’s August so important to understanding the NWA championship. The title was not a national championship in the modern sense. It did not belong to a single promotion with a permanent television home, a fixed roster and a centralized creative department. It was an instrument of cooperation among independent promoters. The champion traveled from territory to territory, bringing the championship with him, defending it against the local area’s most important wrestlers and then moving on to the next market. The champion was simultaneously an attraction, a traveling advertisement for the NWA and a living connection between otherwise independent wrestling territories.

Watson entered August as the third officially recognized NWA World Heavyweight Champion. His reign had begun on March 15 in Toronto, when he defeated Lou Thesz by count-out before approximately 15,000 people. The circumstances of the victory were unusual, but they were also perfectly suited to the way the NWA championship worked. Thesz was not being permanently displaced because the NWA had decided that Watson was now the new face of professional wrestling. Rather, Watson was entrusted with the championship at a moment when Thesz needed time away from the road. Thesz later described the reign as essentially a caretaker arrangement, explaining that his injured ankle required recovery and that he trusted Toronto promoter Frank Tunney enough to allow the championship to be deposited with Watson. Whatever interpretation one places on Thesz’s recollection, the practical result was unmistakable: Watson became world champion, and the NWA now had a different man carrying its most valuable piece of property.

By August, Watson had transformed that opportunity into a substantial championship reign.

The month began in his home territory of Toronto. On August 2, Watson defended the NWA championship against Dick Hutton at Maple Leaf Gardens, defeating him by pinfall. Hutton was not a minor opponent. He was one of the rising young wrestlers in the NWA system and was being positioned as a serious threat. Hutton had already established himself in Toronto with his famous $1,000 challenge, offering the money to anyone who could defeat him within twenty minutes. His championship challenge therefore served a dual purpose. It gave Toronto fans another reason to see Watson defend the world championship, while simultaneously reinforcing Hutton as one of the territory’s most important emerging wrestlers.

The Life and Career of Don Greene

Don Lewis Greene was a longtime mainstay of the NWA Gulas-Welch Tennessee territory, best remembered as one-half of the original Heavenly Bodies with his kayfabe brother Al Greene (Al Denney). A durable, inventive heel and later solid babyface, Greene spent the better part of three decades headlining or near the top of cards across Tennessee, Alabama, and neighboring states, holding multiple versions of the Southern, World, Mid-America, and Tennessee tag team titles along with several junior heavyweight reigns. Outside the ring he was a family man, appliance-store operator, church deacon, and later a law-enforcement and hotel-security professional—living proof that the “Mean” Greene persona was strictly for the ring.

Early Life and Entry into the Business

Born in San Francisco, Greene moved as a boy to Nashville, where his father Lewis opened a grocery that evolved into the long-running Greene’s Appliance and furniture stores. The family business would remain a constant in Don’s life for decades. A solid high-school athlete who clashed with school authorities, Greene drifted into amateur wrestling exhibitions run by local promoter Dick Lever. For roughly three years he worked small shows around Nashville, sometimes taking on audience challengers as a special attraction while still helping run the store.

By the mid-1950s he had turned pro and gravitated to the dominant Mid-America promotion of Nick Gulas and Roy Welch. Early on he occasionally worked under a hood as the Black Bat. Lou Thesz personally taught him the neckbreaker that became his signature finish. The decisive career move came when he teamed with Al Denney. The two first worked together for Lever, then began billing themselves as the Greene Brothers. The name “Heavenly Bodies” simply occurred to Don one day; the flamboyant, rule-breaking heel gimmick—complete at times with green-dyed hair at Jack Pfefer’s suggestion—stuck for years.

Gulas was initially skeptical of the pairing. An Alabama unmasking angle involving the Black Bat, followed by Al’s interference, forced the issue; the team simply started working together and soon proved themselves. They held the Tennessee version of the NWA World Tag Team titles multiple times beginning in 1959 and captured the NWA Southern Tag Team titles repeatedly, especially during a dominant 1969–1971 stretch after Jerry Jarrett began booking Memphis. Their October 6, 1969 debut under the Heavenly Bodies name at the Mid-South Coliseum—defeating Tojo Yamamoto and Johnny Long for the Southern titles—marked the start of a high-drawing heel run against the territory’s top babyfaces.

Greene described the division of labor clearly: he was the more scientific, hold-oriented worker and primary talker with his thick Southern accent and gravelly voice; Al was the brawling “clubber with the big hands.” Together they feuded with Jackie and Don (or Sonny) Fargo, Len Rossi and Bearcat Brown, the Von Brauners, Jerry Jarrett and Tojo Yamamoto, and others. They were not above outrageous heat-seeking: tarring and feathering Bearcat Brown (one of the first regularly integrated tag teams in the South), using a dead bird as a grotesque prop, and dyeing their hair green. Don later reflected that the publicity, even the negative kind, kept their names in the papers.

The team’s longevity was unusual. They worked steadily in the late 1950s, then more sporadically through the 1960s while Don largely homesteaded in Nashville and Al traveled (including Japan and the West Coast). The 1969–1972 Memphis peak under Jarrett, often with Sir Steven Clements (or Rock Riddle) as manager, cemented their place among the territory’s great tag teams. They also held Gulf Coast Southern Tag Team gold and other regional belts.

Singles Work, Later Teams, and Innovation

As a singles competitor Greene was a credible junior heavyweight champion, winning the Mid-America United States/Southern Junior Heavyweight title on multiple occasions between 1961 and 1974 and engaging in a notable rivalry with Lorenzo Parente. He received several NWA World Heavyweight Championship opportunities against Dory Funk Jr. and worked under masks or alternate names (Mr. Wrestling, Masked Superstar #1) when the situation called for it. In 1971 he and Jerry Jarrett participated in what some historians regard as the first scaffold match in professional wrestling; Greene legitimately broke his wrist in a fall.

After the original Heavenly Bodies partnership cooled in 1973, Don turned babyface following an angle in which one of the Interns slapped his daughter at the television studio in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He teamed successfully with Jackie Fargo, Bearcat Brown, Joey Rossi, and, most notably, a young Jerry Lawler. In 1974–1975 the Greene–Lawler “Heavenly Bodies” combination worked Georgia Championship Wrestling and Florida, capturing the NWA Macon Tag Team titles. Greene also returned to the Southern Tag titles with partners such as The Scorpion and continued working the Tennessee Territory loop into 1977.

He was creative and fearless. He once recalled being shot at twice—once while in the ring in Somerset, Kentucky, and once outside a Louisville building—and credited a high-school coach’s advice: if they don’t know who you are, do something to make them remember. That philosophy served him well in a territory that demanded constant reinvention.

Life Outside the Ring and Later Years

Throughout his career Greene continued working in the family appliance business. After retiring from full-time wrestling around 1978 he joined the Metro Nashville Sheriff’s Department and later served as director of security for a corporate hotel chain. He was a longtime member and deacon of Grace Baptist Church in the Nashville area. Married to Betty for 63 years until her death in 2012, he was the father of three daughters (Diane Hooker, Tina Greene, and Donna, who predeceased him). Friends and former colleagues remembered him as a genuine nice guy and natural comedian away from the ring—the opposite of his “Mean” Greene persona.

In 1994 Jim Cornette brought the original Greenes back for a Night of Legends appearance; Cornette later carried the Heavenly Bodies name forward with Tom Prichard, Stan Lane, and Jimmy Del Rey. Don and Al both passed away in 2014, only months apart.

Legacy

Don Greene never became a national television star, yet within the Mid-America territory he was a foundational figure for more than two decades. He helped define the heel tag-team style that filled Mid-South Coliseum and smaller towns across Tennessee and Alabama, mentored or worked with future stars such as Jerry Lawler, and left behind a body of work that still resonates with territory historians and Memphis wrestling fans. Don and Al Greene, The Heavenly Bodies were inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2023. The combination of technical ability, promotional creativity, and longevity made him one of the most reliable and colorful performers of the Gulas–Welch era. In an industry that often chewed people up, Greene managed to build a full life both inside and outside the ring—an achievement as impressive as any title reign.

One Thing I Learned About Sgt. Slaughter

Before he became the iconic drill sergeant, Robert Remus debuted in the AWA in the mid-1970s as “Beautiful” Bobby Remus — a flamboyant, bleached-blond, tie-dye-wearing pretty-boy character whose own wife dyed his hair. The gimmick flopped hard (crowds laughed and other wrestlers blew him kisses), so he quickly switched to the masked Super Destroyer Mark II before finally landing on the Sgt. Slaughter persona that made him famous.

Tracking The World Champions: Nick Bockwinkel AWA World Heavyweight Title - August 1976

August 1976

August 1976 was one of the most revealing months of Nick Bockwinkel’s first AWA World Heavyweight Championship reign. Bockwinkel was no longer simply the new champion who had dethroned Verne Gagne nine months earlier. By this point he had become the central figure around which the American Wrestling Association’s main-event business was being organized. His championship was being defended against established stars, former champions and major attractions, while the AWA simultaneously built a larger ecosystem of challengers around him.

The month is particularly important because it brought together virtually every component of the Bockwinkel championship formula. There was the continuing rivalry with Verne Gagne, the escalating confrontation with The Crusher, the appearance of Wahoo McDaniel as another major challenger, the continuing association with Bobby Heenan, Bobby Duncum and Blackjack Lanza, and, above all, the extraordinary showdown with André the Giant at Chicago’s Comiskey Park.

The André match is usually remembered as the headline event of Bockwinkel’s August, but looking at the entire month demonstrates why the match mattered. André was not simply another challenger placed in front of the champion. He represented the ultimate physical threat to a champion whose principal weapon was intelligence, experience, technical skill and the ability to manipulate the rules. The August schedule therefore provides an unusually clear picture of how the AWA presented Bockwinkel as its World Champion during the mature phase of the territory era.

August 1976

Annual NWA Member Convention

On August 7, 1976, the National Wrestling Alliance held its annual convention in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The gathering marked a formal transition in leadership as Eddie Graham of Championship Wrestling from Florida was elected President of the Alliance. The election came at a moment when the territorial system still functioned with considerable strength yet was already showing the early stresses that would define Stage 6 Fragmentation. Graham’s elevation represented both continuity and a shift toward a younger generation of promoters who had risen through the ranks as active wrestlers.

The slate of officers installed that day reflected the balance of power among the major offices. Mike LeBell of the Los Angeles territory was named First Vice President. Jim Crockett Jr. of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling became Second Vice President. Jim Barnett, the powerful Atlanta-based promoter, was appointed Secretary and Treasurer by Graham himself. Sam Muchnick, the long-time St. Louis promoter who had guided the Alliance for the better part of two decades before stepping down in 1975, was named Advisor to the President. The membership roster at the time still encompassed the core American territories, Canadian offices, Mexican representation, and the Japanese promotions of All Japan and New Japan.

Graham succeeded Fritz Von Erich (Jack Adkisson), who had held the presidency for a single term after Muchnick’s long stewardship. The choice of Graham was widely viewed as a recognition of the consistent strength of the Florida territory under his direction. Championship Wrestling from Florida had become one of the most reliable and creatively respected offices in the Alliance during the first half of the 1970s, producing major stars, maintaining strong television with Gordon Solie, and generating solid houses across the state.

The World Heavyweight Championship at the 1976 Convention

As part of the standard agenda, the Championship Committee and membership reviewed the status of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Terry Funk had been champion since December 10, 1975, when he defeated Jack Brisco in Miami Beach. By the time of the Lake Tahoe meeting he was approaching nine months into the reign and had already logged a heavy schedule of defenses across the United States, Canada, Japan, and other markets.

Available evidence indicates that both Funk and the NWA Committee were satisfied with his performance as champion at that point. Funk himself later wrote in More Than Hardcore that he had hoped to keep the title for a full two years. There is no record of dissatisfaction, formal complaints, or a decision at the August 1976 meeting to shorten the reign or begin planning an immediate change. Jim Barnett continued as the primary booker of the World title, and the championship remained on Funk without interruption through the remainder of 1976.

The actual title change did not occur until February 6, 1977, when Harley Race defeated Funk in Toronto. The intervening months saw Funk continue as a hard-working, traveling champion. The decision to move the belt therefore came later, after Funk had already exceeded the typical length of many previous reigns and after he had indicated to the Alliance (citing a knee issue while also motivated by personal considerations involving Vicki) that he was ready to step aside.

This context reframes the August 1976 meeting: it was not a moment of crisis or discontent regarding the championship. Instead, the Committee and membership appear to have viewed Funk’s reign as successful and ongoing, consistent with his own stated hope of carrying the title for two full years.

The NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship

At the August 7, 1976 NWA convention in Lake Tahoe, the World Junior Heavyweight Championship was vacant.

Danny Hodge had regained the title for a record seventh time on March 2, 1976, defeating Hiro Matsuda in Shreveport. Only thirteen days later, on March 15, Hodge suffered a broken neck in an automobile accident and was forced to retire. He vacated the championship, and it remained empty through the spring and summer of 1976.

The Championship Committee and membership received the standard report on the status of the junior heavyweight division (along with the heavyweight and light-heavyweight titles). With the belt vacant, the practical outcome was that the Alliance left the process of filling it in the hands of the promoters who traditionally controlled the title—primarily Leroy McGuirk’s Tri-State office (Oklahoma/Louisiana/Arkansas territory). No new champion was crowned at the Lake Tahoe meeting itself, and there is no record of any major structural change, name alteration, or reallocation of booking rights for the junior title at that convention.

The vacancy was resolved about seven weeks later. On September 28, 1976, in Shreveport, Louisiana, a tournament final saw Pat Barrett defeat Nelson Royal to claim the vacant NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship. Barrett’s reign was short (65 days); he lost the title to Ron Starr on December 2, and Starr in turn dropped it to Nelson Royal four days later on December 6. Royal then held it into 1977–78.

In short, the Board and Committee at the 1976 meeting simply acknowledged the ongoing vacancy created by Hodge’s retirement and allowed the traditional junior-title territory to organize a tournament to restore a champion. No dramatic intervention or new policy regarding the junior heavyweight title appears to have been enacted at Lake Tahoe.

Eddie Graham’s Path to the Presidency

Edward F. Gossett, known professionally as Eddie Graham, had built his reputation first as a wrestler and then as a promoter. After early years in Texas and a successful run in the Northeast as part of the Golden Graham brothers with Dr. Jerry Graham, he settled in Florida in 1960. He became the top babyface and multi-time champion in the territory before gradually shifting into ownership and booking, helping usher in the Jack Brisco babyface era in Florda by 1969..

By 1971 he had assumed primary control of Championship Wrestling from Florida following the retirement of longtime promoter Cowboy Luttrall. Under Graham the territory thrived, developing or elevating talent that included Dusty Rhodes, the Brisco Brothers, the Funks on frequent tours, and a deep supporting cast. Graham also trained a generation of performers and future bookers, among them his son Mike, Bob Orton Jr., Dick Slater, Bob Roop, Steve Keirn, Paul Orndorff, and a young Hulk Hogan.

His election in 1976 was supported by key figures within the Alliance, including Jim Barnett, Jim Crockett, Jr, Vince McMahon, Sr, and Sam Muchnick himself. Graham was seen as a practical, detail-oriented operator who understood both the wrestling and business sides of the industry. As President he was expected to help coordinate the movement of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship—then held by Terry Funk—and to maintain the cooperative framework that allowed member promotions to exchange talent and protect their geographic territories.

Health Issues: Origins and Escalation

Graham’s physical and mental health problems had deep roots. In 1968 a freak accident in the locker room at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory in Tampa nearly ended his career. A heavy steel window fell on his head while he was preparing for a match. Already blind in one eye, he suffered torn retinas in both eyes, extensive facial lacerations requiring hundreds of stitches, and significant trauma. He was sidelined for approximately fifteen months. The injury left lasting effects and marked the beginning of a long decline in his ability to perform consistently in the ring.

By the mid-1970s Graham had scaled back his in-ring schedule. He continued to appear in tag matches with his son Mike and occasional singles bouts, but health concerns limited his activity. Sources indicate he formally stepped away from regular competition around 1977 because of these issues, though he made limited returns afterward, including matches as late as 1982.

The problems intensified during his presidency. Graham was largely absent from active leadership duties in 1977 and 1978 due to serious health difficulties. In April 1978 he stepped down from the presidency; First Vice President Bob Geigel assumed the role on an interim basis and was later formally elected. The precise medical nature of the 1977–78 decline is not fully detailed in records, but it combined lingering effects of the 1968 head trauma with emerging struggles against depression and alcoholism—conditions that would worsen over the subsequent years.

Alcoholism and depression became central features of Graham’s later life. Financial pressures from real-estate investments that soured added to the burden. By the early 1980s these issues were severe. On January 20, 1985, Graham shot himself at his Tampa home. He died the following day at age 55. The tragedy closed a career that had spanned nearly four decades and left a complicated legacy that extended into subsequent generations of his family.

Graham’s Effect on the NWA

As President, Graham’s tenure was relatively short and interrupted by illness, yet it occurred at a pivotal transitional moment. He helped maintain the formal structures of the Alliance while the larger promotions—particularly the WWWF under Vince McMahon Sr. and the AWA under Verne Gagne—operated with increasing independence. One notable initiative associated with his presidency was the promotion of the first NWA versus WWWF World Championship match in 1978, pitting NWA World Champion Harley Race against WWWF Champion Superstar Billy Graham. The bout, while not a true unification, represented an attempt to create crossover interest between the two major American titles during a period when such collaborations were still rare.

More enduring was Graham’s influence as a territory operator. Championship Wrestling from Florida under his guidance exemplified many of the strengths of the mature territorial model: strong local television, logical long-term storytelling, effective talent development, and consistent house-show business. The Florida office served as a finishing school and a proving ground for performers who later became national stars. Graham’s booking philosophy emphasized clear character work, credible violence, and the careful mentoring of bookers, such as Bill Watts in 1973 and 1974 and the building of local heroes, most notably the transformation of Dusty Rhodes into the American Dream in 1974.

Within the broader NWA structure, Graham’s election signaled a shift toward promoters who had recent in-ring experience and who operated successful mid-sized territories rather than the older generation of office-based administrators. His short active presidency limited the scope of structural reforms he might have pursued, yet the respect he commanded helped stabilize the Alliance during the mid-to-late 1970s. When health forced his resignation, the transition to Bob Geigel and later Jim Crockett Jr. continued the pattern of rotating leadership among the stronger territorial offices.

Eddie Graham’s story is inseparable from both the peak and the emerging fractures of the territorial system. The 1976 Lake Tahoe convention elevated a capable operator at a moment when the Alliance still held considerable cohesion. The World title remained in capable hands under Terry Funk, with both champion and Committee expressing satisfaction and with Funk himself hoping for a full two-year reign. The health problems that had begun with a severe 1968 injury and escalated through the later 1970s forced an early end to Graham’s national leadership role and ultimately contributed to the personal tragedy of 1985. His lasting contribution remains the Florida territory he built and the generation of talent and booking minds shaped under his influence—an impact that outlived both his presidency and the classic territorial era itself.

Stage 6: Fragmentation

August 1976

Year Two Month Eight

August 1976 belongs to Stage 6: Fragmentation. The territorial system that had operated with relative cohesion for decades was beginning to show visible seams. The NWA World Championship still traveled and elevated local cards. Major offices still drew strong houses. Television remained the primary promotional engine. Yet the underlying stresses that would accelerate later in the decade were already present: more independent maneuvering by the larger promotions, increased competition for talent, rising operational costs, and the first clear signals that some offices were prioritizing short-term gains over long-term system stability. The machine still ran, but the parts were no longer moving in perfect synchronization.

The Northeast: WWWF and the Bruno-Hansen Culmination

The World Wide Wrestling Federation remained the strongest and most self-contained office in the country. Bruno Sammartino continued his second long reign as WWWF Heavyweight Champion. The major program of the period reached its climax on August 7 at Madison Square Garden when Bruno defeated Stan Hansen inside a steel cage before approximately 22,000 fans. The match closed the long-running angle that began earlier in the year when Hansen’s lariat “broke” Bruno’s neck. It was only the second cage match in Garden history and carried genuine heat.

The same card featured Bruiser Brody’s Madison Square Garden debut under the management of the Grand Wizard in a squash over Kevin Sullivan. The Executioners (Killer Kowalski and Big John Studd) retained the WWWF Tag Team Championship against Dominic DeNucci and Jose Gonzalez. Strong undercard work from Chief Jay Strongbow, Billy White Wolf, Ivan Putski, and Bobo Brazil rounded out a deep show that was televised on the MSG Network.

The rest of the month kept the program alive on the road. On August 21 in Baltimore (approximately 10,000), Bruno and Hansen fought to a double count-out. Brody continued his rapid ascent with count-out victories and a growing reputation as a legitimate monster. The Executioners remained the dominant heel tag team under Captain Lou Albano. House show business across the Northeast circuit—Philadelphia, the Boston-area towns, Long Island, and secondary markets—stayed consistently strong. The WWWF was operating at a high level, but its increasing independence from the broader NWA talent pool was itself a marker of Stage 6 fragmentation.

Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association staged one of the month’s showcase events on August 27 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Attendance estimates range between 12,000 and 15,000. Nick Bockwinkel, managed by Bobby Heenan, defended the AWA World Heavyweight Championship against André the Giant in a double disqualification. In the main event steel cage match, AWA World Tag Team Champions Blackjack Lanza and Bobby Duncum retained against Dick the Bruiser and The Crusher. The undercard mixed established names—Peter Maivia, Moose Cholak, and the High Flyers of Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell—with solid mid-card work. The stadium show demonstrated that the AWA could still draw significant numbers in a major market, yet it also underscored the growing separation between the AWA and the NWA system.

The South: Georgia, Memphis, and Mid-Atlantic Intensity

Georgia Championship Wrestling saw “Dirty” Dick Slater capture the NWA Georgia Heavyweight Championship from The Spoiler on August 20 in Atlanta. Slater’s reign proved brief—Dusty Rhodes defeated him by disqualification one week later on August 27—but the change reflected the territory’s continued strength. Rhodes remained the biggest drawing babyface in the office. Mr. Wrestling II stayed a major attraction. Jim Barnett’s booking continued to cycle talent effectively even as the larger system began to fray.

The Tennessee Territory delivered some of the strongest consistent houses of the month. On August 9 at the Mid-South Coliseum, Jack Brisco defeated Jerry Lawler to win the Southern Heavyweight Championship in front of 10,098 fans. Lawler regained the title one week later on August 16 before another strong crowd. On August 22, NWA World Champion Terry Funk wrestled Lawler to a 60-minute draw in front of 10,430. Memphis in 1976 still possessed the classic Stage 6 traits of a hot local champion, credible short-term title changes with legitimate outsiders, and periodic World title appearances that elevated the entire card.

Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling under Jim Crockett Promotions earned the informal label “Month of the Casts.” Ole Anderson used a cast on his arm as a weapon throughout the month, battering “Mr. Wrestling” Tim Woods, Dino Bravo, and Wahoo McDaniel. Paul Jones, whose hand had been broken by Blackjack Mulligan, responded in kind with his own cast. On August 11 at the WRAL studios in Raleigh, Angelo Mosca defeated Paul Jones (with assistance from Mulligan) to win the Mid-Atlantic Television Championship.

The Anderson Brothers successfully defended the NWA World Tag Team Championship (Mid-Atlantic version) against the former champions Bravo and Woods. The ongoing Flair-Wahoo program for the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship continued to generate heat. The territory remained one of the most talent-rich and consistently booked offices in the country, even as the broader system showed early signs of strain.

Texas and the Central States

Fritz Von Erich’s Big Time Wrestling in Texas stayed active with regular cards in Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. Rocky Johnson, José Lothario, and the usual mix of heels kept the Sportatorium and surrounding towns busy. Kevin Von Erich made early appearances around this period, beginning the next generation of the family.

In the Central States and St. Louis territory, Harley Race and Bob Backlund continued their Missouri Heavyweight Championship program. On August 13 at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, Terry Funk retained the NWA World title against Gene Kiniski in a steel cage best-of-three-falls match before nearly 10,000 fans. The St. Louis office under Sam Muchnick remained the gold standard for prestige bookings, yet even here the increasing independence of the larger promotions was becoming noticeable.

Canada, Mexico, and Japan

In Canada, Stampede Wrestling ran its regular Calgary and regional cards with Archie Gouldie as North American Heavyweight Champion. The Maritimes (ESA) and Pacific Northwest/Vancouver (NWP) offices continued their weekly schedules with solid local business but little national attention.

Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre maintained its traditional Super Viernes cards at Arena México. The NWA Light Heavyweight, Welterweight, and various national titles continued their usual cycles involving Alfonso Dantés, Carlos Plata, Blue Demon, Perro Aguayo, and the established lucha stars. The product remained distinct from the American style while still connected through the NWA framework.

Japan was building its own parallel structure. All Japan Pro Wrestling concluded portions of its Summer Action Series. On August 28 at Kuramae Kokugikan, Jumbo Tsuruta defeated Jack Brisco to win the NWA United National Championship, a significant step in Jumbo’s rise as Giant Baba’s chosen successor. New Japan Pro Wrestling continued its Asia League series with Antonio Inoki facing Tiger Jeet Singh and other foreign talent. Both Japanese promotions were successfully developing domestic stars while still relying on American and international imports for legitimacy—another marker of a system that was beginning to fragment into more independent spheres.

Business Analysis: Stage 6 Fragmentation

August 1976 illustrated both the residual strength and the emerging cracks of the territorial system. Key markets still delivered strong numbers: Madison Square Garden at 22,000, Memphis repeatedly above 10,000, Comiskey Park in the 12–15,000 range, and St. Louis near 10,000 for a World title cage match. Television remained the primary promotional tool. Talent still moved between offices, but the movement was becoming less cooperative and more competitive.

The NWA World Championship continued to function as the central prestige attraction. Terry Funk’s August itinerary—Florida, Texas, St. Louis, Memphis, and Georgia—demonstrated that the old system could still elevate multiple territories in the same month. Yet the WWWF and AWA operated with increasing independence. Stadium shows required significant investment and could not be sustained weekly. Travel and operational costs continued to rise. The early signals of national ambition and talent raiding that would define the late 1970s and early 1980s were already visible if one looked closely.

Stage 6 is the phase in which the territorial machine still produces strong results while the structural integrity that made those results possible begins to erode. August 1976 captured that tension cleanly: Bruno closing a major program in the Garden, Funk grinding through another month of defenses, Lawler and Rhodes packing houses, young talent rising, and the system still functioning—yet no longer with the same shared sense of long-term stability that had characterized earlier stages. The fragmentation had begun.

We also watched and reviewed the Hair vs Hair Match in 1987 inside a steel cage between Jerry Lawler and Austin Idol. This match is early on in Paul Heyman’s career as well as having the run in from Tommy Rich who was hiding under the ring inside the cage. We are into the 1950s in Texas Wrestling History! In this week’s episode 10, we talk about the automobile accident that resulted in LeRoy McGuirk to lose his one good eye and end his career as World Junior Heavyweight Champion. We also talk about the influence of heavyweight champions in southern wrestling in the 1950s.

As The Official Historian for the Brisco and Bradshaw Show, I am back in the rest of Episode 10, where Gerry, JBL and I discuss the wrestling war between the Amarillo Office, then owned by Dory Detton and the Colorado office, owned by Mike London over the towns of Albuquerque, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. Detton claimed he bought Albuquerque from London for $3,000 and had the cashed check to prove it, London claimed he only bought the booking rights and not the promotional rights. This all played out in the NWA meetings of 1953 and 1954. Sam Muchnick took Detton’s side but let the membership decide, former NWA founder Pinkie George (now operating in Texas) took London’s side in the dispute. Lots of craziness in the National Wrestling Alliance, which eventually leads to Doc Sarpolis buying the Amarillo office and settling the whole dispute. Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling

This quarter sits squarely in Stage 6 of the Territory Era (Fragmentation, 1975–1985). Jim Crockett Promotions was still a pure regional powerhouse centered on the Carolinas and Virginia, with strong weekly television from the WRAL studios in Raleigh (Bob Caudle and David Crockett on the call), consistent house-show circuits, and a roster deep enough to sustain multiple simultaneous main-event programs. The bicentennial summer of 1976 delivered peak territorial heat: long-running feuds reached boiling points, title belts changed hands in dramatic fashion, and key roster transitions set the stage for the next wave of stars.

July 1976

July was defined by two dominant storylines and high-profile visitors.

The NWA World Tag Team Championship program between Gene and Ole Anderson (the Minnesota Wrecking Crew) and the former champions Dino Bravo and “Mr. Wrestling” Tim Woods hit its peak. The Andersons had regained the titles on June 28 in Greenville. Throughout July the matches remained extremely close; Ole’s casted arm repeatedly became the deciding factor that allowed the Andersons to retain. These bouts were physical, roughhouse affairs that drew strong heat across the territory.

Simultaneously, the personal war between Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair and Wahoo McDaniel intensified. Flair had taken the title from Wahoo in the infamous May 24 Charlotte “table leg” match (Wahoo required dozens of stitches). By late July the two were colliding in fence matches that generated major gates. Flair held on, but Wahoo was closing the gap.

Blackjack Mulligan continued his dominant reign as United States Heavyweight Champion, moving from Paul Jones to Rufus R. “Freight Train” Jones as primary challenger. Mulligan handled the competition with relative ease and extended his already lengthy title run.

Notable visitors included Andre the Giant, who worked a short swing against Mulligan and served as special referee in U.S. Title matches. Olympic wrestler Chris Taylor also appeared briefly, primarily against Jerry “Crusher” Blackwell in “Battle of the 400 Pounders” matches before departing after a television appearance. Young talent such as Randy and Lanny Poffo (with father Angelo) began appearing on the undercard.

No titles changed hands in July, which was unusual for the territory, but the intensity of the existing programs more than compensated.

August 1976 – “The Month of the Casts”

August became defined by weapons of opportunity—specifically casts.

Ole Anderson continued using his cast as a weapon against Bravo, Woods, and eventually Wahoo McDaniel. The Andersons successfully defended the World Tag Titles throughout the month, with the cast again proving decisive. Ole’s interference as a lumberjack in a Flair–Wahoo match further escalated tensions, leading to a series of Indian Strap Matches between Ole and Wahoo in which both men wore casts. Wahoo generally came out on top in those encounters.

The only title change of the month occurred on the August 11 television taping in Raleigh (aired August 14). Angelo “Big Nasty” Mosca, with help from Blackjack Mulligan, defeated Paul Jones to capture the Mid-Atlantic Television Championship. Jones suffered a broken jaw in the process. The following night Mulligan broke Jones’s hand in a separate match. Jones returned wearing a cast of his own and used it as a weapon in rematches against Mosca, but Mosca retained the TV title through the end of the month.

Flair continued to hold the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title against Wahoo, though the challenger was getting closer. The overall product remained solid—strong television angles, consistent house-show business, and multiple heated programs running concurrently—but September would eclipse it in terms of long-term impact.

September 1976

September proved the most consequential month of the year to date for Jim Crockett Promotions.

The central story reached its climax on September 11 in Greenville, South Carolina. In a steel cage / fence match, Wahoo McDaniel defeated Ric Flair to regain the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship. This was the payoff to a summer-long chase rooted in the May Charlotte table-leg incident. Flair immediately vowed the feud was not over, setting up further title exchanges later in the year.

Wahoo was also heavily involved with Professor Boris Malenko and the Mongols. After a television confrontation in which Malenko claimed Wahoo had broken his teeth, a series of Loser Leaves Town and Hair vs. Hair matches followed. Wahoo defeated Bolo Mongol, shaved only the top-knot of his hair, and forced him out of the territory. Geto Mongol had already departed. On the September 29 television program, Malenko introduced a new masked mystery man: the Masked Superstar (Bill Eadie, freshly rebranded from Bolo Mongol). The Superstar was hyped as an Olympic gold medalist and dual-doctor (psychology and neurology) with a devastating clothesline and cobra clutch.

Another major arrival occurred late in the month when Greg “The Hammer” Valentine (promoted as the “brother” of Johnny Valentine). debuted. He immediately began teaming with Flair.

The biggest structural change came when Gene and Ole Anderson left the territory in late September, taking the NWA World Tag Team Titles with them to Georgia Championship Wrestling. Ole had lost a series of Indian Strap Matches to Wahoo and then Loser Leaves Town matches to Rufus R. Jones, signaling the end of their regular Mid-Atlantic run (they would not return as full-time regulars until 1981). With the World Tag Titles gone, Crockett reactivated the dormant Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championship and announced a tournament on the September 25 television show to crown new champions. The tournament would run into early November.

Overall Business Analysis and Context for Q3 1976

Jim Crockett Promotions operated from a position of genuine strength in the third quarter of 1976. The core cities—Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Greenville, Columbia, Richmond, Roanoke, and others—continued to deliver reliable houses. Television remained the engine that drove the live events, with clear, consistent storytelling that rewarded weekly viewers.

The Flair–Wahoo program was the emotional and commercial centerpiece of the summer. Their series of increasingly violent matches (fence matches, lumberjack matches, and the decisive Greenville cage match) represented peak territorial booking: personal heat, physicality, and a logical progression that paid off with a title change. The ban forced creativity and mobility. González became a regular on cards across northern and central Mexico and began developing the masked personas that allowed her to work under different identities when needed: Flor Negra, Rosa Blanca, La Tirana, La Dama del Enfermero, and La Enfermera. These characters gave her flexibility while she continued building her reputation as a reliable, high-work-rate performer.

La Novia del Santo and Personal Turning Points

In the late 1950s or early 1960s, González became engaged to a man living in the United States who insisted she leave wrestling before marriage. With months remaining before the wedding, she chose neither full retirement nor open defiance. Instead she adopted a mask and, after obtaining permission from El Santo himself, worked as La Novia del Santo—the only non-family member ever authorized to use the Santo name and silver aesthetic in that fashion. The character was short-lived, lasting roughly seven months. Fans often recognized her by her distinctive movement and curly hair escaping the mask, but the device allowed her to continue competing while formally complying with her fiancé’s demand.

The marriage did not last. Shortly after the wedding she became pregnant; her husband left. In July 1957 she gave birth to a daughter, Irma Eugenia Aguilar Morales, known professionally as Irma Aguilar. As a single mother, González returned to the ring with renewed purpose. Wrestling became both vocation and livelihood. She bought a house, supported her family, and continued to travel extensively.

Rivalries, Titles, and International Reach

The defining rivalry of González’s mid-career was with Chabela Romero. The two met repeatedly in high-stakes luchas de apuestas. González defeated Romero in hair-versus-hair matches in Torreón (1971), Pachuca (1974), and Naucalpan (1979). She also collected other notable victories: the mask of La India in 1963, the hair of Charito Silva, Chela Salazar, Marina Rey, and Martha la Sarapera (twice), and the mask of La Mujer X. Early in her career she had been the first woman to force an opponent (La Dama Enmascarada) to unmask in a formal apuestas match in Mexico.

In the Universal Wrestling Association era she added world-title credibility. On May 25, 1980, she defeated American Vicki Williams for the UWA World Women’s Championship; she held it for 133 days before Williams regained it. Additional recognized world titles from U.S. and Indonesian promotions further underlined her international standing. Las Irmas: Mother and Daughter

Irma Aguilar debuted in the mid-1970s and eventually became her mother’s most important tag-team partner. Billed as Las Irmas, the pair worked together for roughly a quarter-century. Aguilar brought height and a complementary style to González’s compact power. In August 1990 they became the first holders of the Mexican National Women’s Tag Team Championship, defeating Neftali and Satanakia in a tournament final. Their reign lasted 497 days. The mother-daughter team headlined cards, challenged for titles in Japan, and symbolized continuity across generations of Mexican women’s wrestling.

When the Mexico City ban finally lifted in 1986, González and Aguilar were among the central figures who returned women’s matches to major arenas, including early high-profile cards at the Toreo de Cuatro Caminos and later appearances associated with Arena México.

The Music Career

It was a brief but colorful side venture that took place primarily in 1982, during the later peak of her wrestling career. It was never a full parallel profession, but it produced a small body of recorded work that fans still associate with her and that she has continued to perform informally decades later.

In 1982 she released material on the Mexican label Discos Gabal (sometimes listed simply as Gabal). The known commercial output consists of:

• One album: Le canta a su público (1982). It is frequently linked to or credited under the billing “Irma Gonzalez ‘La Campeona’ con el acordeón de Pedro Montalvo.” The “La Campeona” moniker directly referenced her wrestling persona and championship status.

• A single: “Puro Mandilón” / “Salgo Ganando” (1982).

“Puro Mandilón” (also referred to as “El Mandilón”) is by far the best-known track. It is a humorous, sharp-tongued song in a popular Mexican style (ranchera or norteño-leaning with accordion). The lyrics mock a man who abandons her, labeling him a “mandilón”—Mexican slang for a weak, henpecked, or cowardly man. Surviving fragments that González herself has sung in interviews capture the tone:

The song’s mix of personal disappointment and defiant humor fits the resilient public image she projected both in and out of the ring. “Salgo Ganando” and other material on the album appear to follow a similar popular, accessible style aimed at her existing wrestling audience rather than a crossover pop market.

González is credited as both composer and interpreter. Sources describe her voice as strong and characterful rather than classically trained. She has spoken of performing mariachi-style material in Plaza Garibaldi and of writing songs dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, though these seem to have been more informal or local performances rather than additional commercial releases.

The music project was short-lived. After the 1982 recordings she returned her primary focus to wrestling (still competing into the mid-1990s) and later to training younger luchadoras. There is no evidence of further studio albums or sustained promotional activity as a recording artist.

Later Performances

Even in advanced age, González has continued to sing “Puro Mandilón” and other songs from her repertoire when the opportunity arises. She performed it during interviews and promotional appearances around her 2023 CMLL Homenaje a Dos Leyendas tribute (the first time CMLL formally honored a female wrestler in that major annual event). Video clips from that period show her singing the song with clear enjoyment and the same spirited delivery that characterized her ring work.

González’s music career is a footnote compared with her pioneering role in women’s lucha libre, but it is a revealing one. It demonstrates the same independence, sense of humor, and willingness to step outside expected roles that defined her wrestling life. González continued competing into her late fifties. On June 10, 1995, at age 59, she appeared on the undercard of AAA’s Triplemanía III-A. Her last confirmed match took place on April 13, 1996, for Promo Azteca in Mexico City, teaming with her daughter against La Chola and La Rebelde. Accumulated knee injuries, including the eventual need for a prosthesis, led to her retirement from full-time competition, though she maintained that she never fully left the sport and continued training younger wrestlers.

In later years official recognition caught up with her contributions. In 2020 she received formal acknowledgments for sporting merit from Mexican governmental and professional bodies. One Thing I Learned About Precious Paul Ellering

The famous “Precious” nickname had nothing to do with his appearance or wrestling persona’s flashiness. It came from his real-life interest in investing in precious metals and the stock market.

He was an active investor who followed the markets closely, and his on-screen character reflected that by often carrying a rolled-up Wall Street Journal to the ring. The moniker stuck and became one of the most recognizable manager nicknames in wrestling history.

Tracking The World Champions: Gene Kiniski NWA World Heavyweight Title - August 1966

August 1966 in the Territory Era

August 1966 was month 8 of the second year of the strongest 10 year period in the territory era, Stage 5: Consolidation.

Kiniski had defeated Lou Thesz for the championship on January 7, 1966, at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis before 11,612 fans, ending Thesz’s remarkable 1,079-day reign. Seven months later, Kiniski was no longer simply the new champion. He had become the traveling representative of the entire NWA system, moving from territory to territory, defending the championship against the most important local and regional stars, protecting the title while allowing those challengers to remain strong enough to generate additional business.

August was particularly revealing because Kiniski was not being used as a champion who simply appeared in one city and defended against the same challenger repeatedly. Instead, he was being circulated through several different wrestling markets. Florida, Texas and Indianapolis each used him differently. In Florida he was inserted into an already established group of major stars, including Eddie Graham and Lou Thesz. In Texas he became the outsider against the Von Erich family, creating one of the most logical and emotionally effective championship programs available to the Dallas and Houston offices. In Indianapolis he faced Dick the Bruiser, the WWA World Heavyweight Champion, in an interpromotional confrontation that symbolized the fragmented but still interconnected wrestling world of 1966.

This was the territorial system functioning exactly as its architects intended.

Kiniski entered August as a champion whose greatest asset was credibility. He was not presented as an unbeatable superhero. He was a massive, physical, technically competent heel who could lose a fall, be counted out, be disqualified, or wrestle to a time-limit draw without losing the championship. That distinction was essential. The NWA World Heavyweight Championship was not supposed to change hands every time the champion encountered a popular local challenger. The challenger’s objective was to prove that he could defeat the champion, while the champion’s objective was to survive, retain the title and move on to the next territory.

That formula allowed Kiniski to work an enormous number of different programs without exhausting any one market.

The First Florida Tour (August 1st-August 5th, 1966)

Kiniski opened August in Eddie Graham’s Championship Wrestling from Florida, one of the stronger NWA territories of the mid-1960s. Graham, a top babyface and eventual promoter, was the natural challenger, and Lou Thesz remained a major attraction even after losing the title.

Jimmy Saied Wehba, better known throughout the wrestling world as Skandor Akbar (Arabic for “Alexander the Great”), was one of the most effective and hated figures of the territorial era. Born September 29, 1934, in Wichita Falls, Texas, and raised in nearby Vernon, he combined authentic Middle Eastern heritage with a larger-than-life villainous persona that generated intense heat for more than three decades. As both a capable in-ring performer and, later, the cigar-chomping general of Devastation Inc., Akbar left a lasting mark on Mid-South Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, and the broader NWA landscape before his death on August 19, 2010, in Garland, Texas, at age 75.

Wehba’s father, Saied, emigrated from Lebanon and worked as a grocer in the Texas Panhandle. His mother, Mary (of Syrian descent but Texas-born), raised Jimmy as the youngest of three children alongside two older sisters. From an early age he showed exceptional physical strength. A cousin who owned a gym introduced him to weightlifting as a preteen; promotional claims later held that he could bench-press 500 pounds. He worked as a bouncer and began refereeing matches after befriending promoters, studying the business from the apron before stepping into the ring himself.

Family connections also pulled him toward the profession. Two uncles had wrestled (one under a Sheik gimmick), and cousin Frankie Cain performed as the Great Mephisto. Wehba trained under figures including Lou Thesz and Jimmy Young. He debuted around 1962–1963 under his own name or as Wildman Wehba, working the usual territorial circuit of the era.

The Birth of Skandor Akbar

In 1966 Fritz Von Erich, running the Dallas office, advised Wehba that a more Arabic-sounding name would better capitalize on his dark complexion and heritage. He chose Skandor Akbar. Billed from Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt depending on the territory, he quickly settled into the role of a hated foreign heel. The name and presentation stuck for the rest of his career.

His most important early partnership came in the Tri-State territory (Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana under Leroy McGuirk). Teaming with Olympic silver medalist and local hero Danny Hodge, Akbar captured the NWA United States Tag Team Championship (Tri-State version). The alliance did not last. Akbar turned on Hodge, launching a heated feud that drew strong heat and occasional real danger from fans who adored the babyface. The two men remained linked for years; their rivalry could still be revived on cards long after both had moved on.

Akbar also held titles elsewhere. He won the NWA Tri-State North American Heavyweight Championship by defeating Arman Hussein in late 1974, a run that helped establish Hussein as a top babyface. In Georgia he teamed with Ox Baker to capture the NWA Georgia Tag Team Championship and earlier held the NWA Macon Tag Team titles with partners including Buddy Colt and Rocket Monroe. In Australia’s World Championship Wrestling territory in the mid-1970s he worked primarily as a face, capturing the NWA Austra-Asian Heavyweight Championship and the tag titles with George Gouliovas while feuding with The Great Mephisto. A brief late-1970s run in the WWWF saw him managed by Freddie Blassie and positioned as a contender, though larger storylines involving Bruno Sammartino limited his impact.

He was never a pure technician or high-flyer. At a billed 6-foot-2 and around 230–250 pounds, Akbar relied on power, the Camel Clutch as a finishing hold, and a willingness to work stiff and bloody. Crowds responded to the intensity. He traveled constantly across the South, Midwest, and overseas (Singapore, New Zealand, Japan), absorbing the realities of territory life: long drives, shared hotel rooms, and the constant need to protect the business.

The General and Devastation Inc.

By 1977 Akbar had largely stepped away from full-time in-ring competition and reinvented himself as a manager. Adding the title “General,” he formed villainous stables that became his greatest contribution. In Bill Watts’s Mid-South Wrestling (later the Universal Wrestling Federation) the group was often called Akbar’s Army. In Fritz Von Erich’s World Class Championship Wrestling it was formalized as Devastation Inc.

Devastation Inc. functioned as a rotating stable of monsters and heels designed to generate heat against the territory’s babyfaces. Over the years the roster included Kamala, One Man Gang, The Missing Link, Killer Khan, Al Perez, the early Mick Foley as Cactus Jack, Greg Valentine, Nord the Barbarian, and many others. Akbar’s presentation was consistent: Middle Eastern attire, a perpetual cigar, arrogant promos, and a willingness to interfere with foreign objects or fireballs. One of the most infamous moments came when he burned Hacksaw Jim Duggan with a fireball in Mid-South, an angle that produced genuine heat and later required security measures, including a bulletproof vest for a Superdome appearance after death threats.

In World Class the stable clashed repeatedly with the Von Erichs at the Dallas Sportatorium and across Texas. Akbar’s presence helped elevate the promotion’s “good versus pure evil” storytelling. Fans hated him so thoroughly that even rival manager Gary Hart could briefly turn babyface by opposing him. The group moved fluidly between Mid-South/UWF and World Class as bookings and alliances shifted, always centered on Akbar’s ability to talk, scheme, and draw heat.

He continued managing into the 1990s in the Global Wrestling Federation and independent shows, briefly aligning with Kevin Von Erich before turning on him, and later guiding younger talent. Even in the late 2000s he still appeared on small Texas cards under the Devastation banner.

The Cost of Being the Villain

Akbar fully embraced the heat. He refused to break character in public, ate in restaurants rather than at home to avoid being followed to his family, and accepted the physical risks that came with the role. Fans threw rocks and sticks, smashed car windows, and chased him from arenas. A forehead scar from a cue-stick attack after the Hodge turn and other injuries marked the price of authenticity. He told interviewers that wrestling was about dragons and dragon-slayers, and that his job was to supply the dragons. The private cost was real: multiple marriages (including one that ended with his second wife’s death from kidney failure), limited time with his son Darryl, and a personal life subordinated to the character. Yet he expressed no major regrets, stating he would do it all again.

Later Years and Legacy

After the major territories declined, Akbar promoted shows in East Texas, trained wrestlers at Doug’s Gym in Dallas, and remained a regular on the independent circuit. He appeared in the documentaries Heroes of World Class and Triumph and Tragedies of World Class. Mentors of a quieter sort also remembered him fondly. Jim Ross and a young Steve Austin both rode the roads with Akbar and absorbed old-school lessons on psychology, time management, and the business itself.

He died on August 19, 2010, after a battle with prostate cancer (reports also mentioned complications from a fall). He was survived by his son Darryl and extended family.

Skandor Akbar’s career spanned the classic territorial system from its robust middle years into its decline. As a wrestler he was a solid, heat-drawing heel who could hold titles and sell major programs. As a manager he became one of the definitive foreign-heel authorities of the 1980s, giving coherent identity and direction to a succession of monsters while protecting the integrity of the babyface heroes who defeated them. In an era that demanded clear moral lines and intense emotional investment from the audience, few did the villain’s work more completely or more effectively.

One Thing I Learned About Dick Hutton

He was the first wrestler to claim both an NCAA title and the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. In the ring he was known for technical, relatively gimmick-free wrestling (including an open $1,000 challenge to audience members in some territories that no one ever collected), though he was sometimes criticized for lacking the flash to draw big crowds. After heart issues forced his retirement, he lived on a ranch raising cattle and horses.

The Life and Career of Sonny Fargo

Jack Lewis Faggart, better known to wrestling fans as Sonny Fargo and immortalized as “Roughhouse” or “Nuthouse” Fargo, occupied a rare and singular place in the territorial era. Born July 20, 1928, in Rowan County, North Carolina, to Lewis and Delma Swink Faggart, he grew up alongside his brother Henry (who would become the legendary Jackie Fargo) and sister Kathleen. The brothers entered professional wrestling in the early 1950s after training under Joe Marshall and Kenny Marshall. Sonny debuted in 1950 and spent the next three-plus decades carving out a career that was never conventional. He worked primarily across the Carolinas, Tennessee, and the Gulf Coast, yet his path split into two distinct lives that few performers ever managed so successfully: the reliable, understated referee of Jim Crockett Promotions in the Mid-Atlantic and the unhinged, crowd-drawing wildman who became a periodic phenomenon in the Memphis and Nashville territories.

In the late 1950s Sonny’s connection to the Fabulous Fargos began outside the ring. Jackie and Don Fargo (Don Kalt) had already established themselves as one of the hottest tag teams in the country—bleached-blond, identically dressed, earring-wearing, strutting heels who sold out arenas from New York to Alabama. Their March 30, 1957, Madison Square Garden match against Antonino Rocca and Miguel Pérez drew a then-record 20,125 fans, the first 20,000-plus crowd for wrestling at the Garden. When the pair moved into the Nick Gulas–Roy Welch territory in 1957, Sonny, Jackie’s real-life brother, joined them as ringside support and second. He worked the corner, reinforced the family presentation, and provided backup during the wild brawls that defined the act.

That support role changed in late August 1957. On August 21 in Mobile, Alabama, all three Fargos appeared together in the ring for the first time. Six days later, on August 27 at the Nashville Hippodrome, they competed in a Texas Tornado Tag Match against Roy, Herb, and Lester Welch. It marked Sonny’s first appearance in the ring in Nashville and the first time the three Fargos wrestled together in that city. The card was one of eighteen consecutive sellouts at the Hippodrome that year, a testament to the explosive impact the flashy, arrogant Fargos had on the Tennessee market. The Welch family—deeply tied to the promotion through Roy Welch and established as popular babyfaces—provided the perfect opposition for the introduction of the third Fargo brother into active competition.

From that point Sonny became a regular part of the Fabulous Fargos whenever needed. He filled in when Don was unavailable, including after Don accidentally shot himself in the leg while practicing a quick-draw gimmick. The brothers captured regional gold, including Mid-America World Tag Team titles, and continued the flashy, rule-breaking style that set the template for every bleached-blond tag team that followed. Jackie would later team with a long list of partners and claim more than forty tag titles across his career, many of them with Don or Sonny. The Fargos’ willingness to brawl with chairs, tables, and anything else at hand helped popularize the wild, anything-goes matches that became a hallmark of Tennessee wrestling and later influenced the hardcore style.

By the early 1960s Sonny and Jackie were working Madison Square Garden dates together. Sonny also experimented with other roles, including a 1963 stint in Championship Wrestling from Florida as the silent, masked Assassins’ Valet, where he revived the team with an oxygen mask—once accidentally knocking Eddie Graham cold with the tank and nearly causing a riot. In early 1964 he worked under a mask as the Masked Rebel and briefly held the NWA Southern Tag Team Championship (Mid-America version) with Jackie before unmasking.

Around the same period Sonny began transitioning into a full-time refereeing role with Jim Crockett Promotions in the Carolinas. There he was the quiet, competent official who understood match psychology and knew when to insert himself or stay out of the way. He continued officiating major events into the 1980s, including multiple Starrcade cards from 1983 through 1986. Yet he never fully left the Tennessee scene. From the late 1960s onward he returned sporadically under a new and wildly effective persona: Roughhouse (sometimes Nuthouse) Fargo, the mentally unstable brother Jackie would check out of a psychiatric hospital when he needed help dealing with heels.

Clad in old tights and tiny boots, Sonny ate fans’ popcorn, delivered nonsensical promos, climbed into the crowd, and attacked opponents with ketchup bottles, ice cream cones, or anything else at hand. He would maul the heels, the referee, managers, and occasionally even Jackie himself. Fans believed the gimmick. Houses jumped whenever Roughhouse was booked. Jerry Jarrett later called him a huge box-office draw and one of the great people in the business.

The brothers teamed successfully throughout the early-to-mid 1970s, capturing the NWA Southern Tag Team Championship (Mid-America version) multiple times with each other and with partners such as Tojo Yamamoto and Rufus R. Jones. Feuds involved the Interns, the Von Brauners, the Garvin Brothers, the Bounty Hunters, and the Bicentennial Kings. Even after turning fifty Sonny continued to headline Tennessee cards while maintaining his referee duties in the Carolinas. The contrast was stark: the same man who looked like a mild-mannered desk clerk in one territory became an offbeat avenging angel in the other.

After NWA Mid-America wound down in the late 1970s, Sonny made occasional appearances for the Continental Wrestling Association. He retired from active competition around 1984 but continued refereeing for Jim Crockett Promotions. In later years diabetes took a severe toll; he became a double amputee and used a motorized chair. Those who visited him near the end of his life found the same good-natured personality intact. He had married Delores Tutherow Faggart, who predeceased him in 1999; they had a son, Obie, and a daughter, Debbie. Sonny died at home in China Grove, North Carolina, on August 20, 2008, at the age of eighty. In 2009 he was posthumously inducted into the NWA Wrestling Legends Hall of Heroes alongside Jackie and Don Fargo.

Sonny Fargo never became a national television star in the modern sense. His greatness lived in the specific texture of the territory system—the ability to begin as a ringside second, step into the ring for the first time alongside his brothers in a sold-out Nashville Tornado match against the Welch family in 1957, help define one of the era’s most influential tag teams, and then reinvent himself as both a trusted referee and a chaotic drawing card. The mild official of the Carolinas and the popcorn-eating madman of Memphis were the same man, and both versions remain fondly remembered by those who saw them. The Fabulous Fargos’ flash, heat, and brawling style, and Sonny’s unique dual career within and beside that legacy, still echo through Southern wrestling history.

One Thing I Learned About Jun Akiyama

As a kindergarten-aged kid, he climbed up onto the large iron arch of a bridge spanning reclaimed land near the coast (a short bike ride from his home). He got stuck up there, had to be rescued by maritime security officers, and was thoroughly scolded by his parents afterward.
